XFree86, X Window managers including but not limited to gnome, have an interesting client/server model. It is almost the most unique and interesting feature actually. here's some information about it:

when you say you want to do this and learn the command line stuff later, i think you'll find anything to do with unix involves a deeper understanding of the 'command line stuff'. especially if you want to configure X properly to take advantage of the client/server networked feature. so if you're seriously interested in learning about unix in general, and not how to click around in a gui, then start with a little RTFM! and understand how unix works.
