2nd Win98 OS in the 2nd drive?
:
I have Win 98 on my C drive (running for 3 years!) . Can I tell the Bios to start with D drive (it is a phisical 2nd drive), and to install ANOTHER Win 98 there (or maybe other OS), without any special problems?
For example:
1) can I later ask the Bios to return to the old sequence starting with C drive, and have the old installation work as before? And again to return to D - as the 1st booting drive?
2) will I be able to access both drives as I can do now?
3) will the new Window installation understand and "protest" that I already have the old one (and vice-a-versa?)
4) any other problems?

Re: 2nd Win98 OS in the 2nd drive?
Some bios's have a boot menu. To boot off IDE0 (C or IDE1 (D . For me I press F8 before it boots off any drive, and the menu comes up. But that might not be true for your bios.
1). If thiers not boot menu, then your bios probably has a Boot First Device, Boot second device, and Boot third device.
First should always be the floppy. Second is any device, IDE0, 1, CDROM. That is how you choose what boot off C or D (assuming thiers no bootable floppy in the floppy drive).
2) yes
3)Windows 98? Probably not
4) Not that I can think of offhand

Re: 2nd Win98 OS in the 2nd drive?
although keep in mind. If you have win95 on the mbr of a secondary drive, and try to install 98, it will say it can't install. So if anything like that happens, just disable the secondary drive in your bios. My secondary drive used to have 95, and I can't install 98 on my main drive unless I disable the seconday drive in my bios.
just a little fyi for everybody out there

Re: 2nd Win98 OS in the 2nd drive?
Thanks for the prompt reply.
1) So it should be no lasting problems, if I just SWITCH with the BIOS whatever drive will be booting 1st? And switch again?
2) And the 2nd installation, on the 2nd drive, shouldn't destroy anything from the older installation (on the C drive, which I want to keep)?
(both of the OS are the same Win 9
3) I understood that Win 95 does "protest" against Win 98 even on the other drive?
4) If I disable C drive with Win 95, install Win 98 (or Linux) on D drive, and again enable drive C, will it be OK?
Thanks again

Re: 2nd Win98 OS in the 2nd drive?
1) I've never actually done this, but I believe it would work.
2) I don't think they would mess with eachother. It might be safer to disable C in your bios when installing it on D, so it won't mess with it's master boot record.
3) yeah. the win95 is on the master boot record of a second drive, even if I try to install win98 on the main drive, it will still protest the installation. I just disable the second drive in my bios and it installs fine.
4). Not sure about linux. but with 98 yeah.

Re: 2nd Win98 OS in the 2nd drive?
Thanks, you got my questions right ...
Not yet done. Still a little nervous abot loosing all the drivefull of rubish, with the experiments with BIOS...
But if it works, why everybody is trying to have multibooting "hard way", using partitions of trhe same HD. Is it not easier with 2 independent HDs? It looks safer as well? But frst I have to backup....(yeaa, I know, should be done regularly...)
