I remember one of my friends (blonde girl) was sent a spam email asking for her credit card number and she actually gave it to them, well needless to say some money went missing and there was a lot of commotion over it for a couple of weeks.

For the most part, yes, however, the vast majority of spam we've seen comes from a unique account and unique IP. It's my belief that plenty of forum spam actually comes from real humans being paid small amounts of money to post on forums. They can get past any technical measures we put in place, and they just hit and run. There are enough forums that exist, and enough free email hosts that exist, that they by the time anyone would get back around to posting on TWL again (if ever), they've been assigned a new IP address, and by default will just use a new email address and account name to throw away for each round of spam.

Short of making it painfully annoying to register (e.g. pay $1, or answer a 10-question quiz, or draw a picture of a cat, and have it approved by a moderator), I'm kind of at a loss for how to stop it, other than try our best to police the forums for spam, and encourage users to use the "Report Post" functionality.

(A couple users have been particularly helpful in that respect, lately. Special thanks to spectralkinesis and slugbug for contributing in that area!)

At least it is not over-run with porn ads. Those are the worst.

if j and k in men in black sourced their news from over-exaggerated tabloids, i source my news from spam - that way, i know what's coming my way.
