Default Video Card Terms

I figure you guys will know this.

I consider myself a pretty knowledgeable person when it comes to computers. Video cards are a different situatuion.

There are a few terms here I hear quite often, and I'd appreciate your help in defining them. Google was no help.

Graphics pipeline - heard about this one alot around the launch of Xbox 360. Something about it having 48?

Pixel engine - just heard this one on Reg Hardware, a new ATI card has 12 of them.

Also, I know that Frames Per Second has to do with the smoothness of the game, meaning it produces x amount of frames per second, but what restricts those frames in the first place?

Thanks in advance.

Here's a great little article I found that should help.

As for restricting frames per second, it's usually a CRT monitors refresh rate that will do that. Unless you're talking about the video card itself, like why can't you play high end games on a crappy video card. That is simply because the grapics card isn't powerful enough to render all of the graphics fast enough. Like a CPU for example, the faster it is, the faster your computer will do tasks.
