Make sure it likes your hardware. It does not like my ide controller (refuses to go into dma mode5).

edit: oh yeah, and it has a bug with certain nvidia cards, causing the refresh rate to stick at 60hz in fullscreen OpenGL/D3D mode

Mine runs 24/7 with a heavy workload.

I typically have upwards of 11 programs running 80% of the time, rarely running idle.

Occasionally I have to reboot but few and far in between. As much as I hate to say it in my opinion it's the most stable OS MS has come up with.

Default why win 2000

runs great in my soho lan,
continuing to make all the job for user (i.e. non-tweakable, ergo somehow stable)
some games don't work others run smother then w98,
graphic editors, office run slightly faster,
surfing slightly better,
crashing from time to time on non-w2k approved sw,
good memory handling and smarten disk usage,
slow at startup, but if you remove some services, can be acceptable,
I prefer it instead XP, since XP is weird attempt to build desktop OS based on NOS (+ all the things we know about XP),
again - best from micro so far, nice attempt to combine maximum goods from various vendors

Cheers

Windows 2000 Professional is an extremely stable operating system. Furthermore, it offers a plethora of features useful for basic and advanced users, including varrying user levels, file security (NTFS), and IIS. In my experiences, Windows 2000 is significantly superior to Windows 98. There are some incompatabilities with hardware and software, but after applying the service pack(s?), a compatability layer exists, where applications can be run in an environment simulating Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0. It's not perfect, but I've seen it solve some problems.

If you've got the money, or some other method of obtaining Windows 2000 Professional, I would definately suggest using it, and seeing if it suits your needs. Alternately, Windows XP Professional offers stability similar to that of Windows 2000, along with some new features, and similar performance, but possibly better hardware compatability.

win 98 is meant for the home user who just wants to surf porn and play solitaire.. 2k is for the office user who wants the serve porn and make solitaire so dont compare it directly to 98, especially as its 2 years older, if you wanna compare 2k to a desktop windows then do it to ME which in my experience is fine, i used it for over a year before switching to XP which again is fine ;D

though this box is only for surfing, chattin, gaming and light programming

ME is a red headed step child OS  ;D

XP is well don't have words for it yet.

Apache >> IIS?

IIS is a gapping whole of security flaws, wouldn't run it if you paid me to.

Win98 & 2k & FreeBSD are the OS's I prefer.

Hey I even worked on a WFW3.11 box today. Diehards you have to love em.
