Cause:
I suspect you are going to the Run command and typing ipconfig, then pressing ENTER. The program runs through completion (which is very quick) then returns that it is done; since the command window is open only for that program, it closes.

Solution:
What you need to do is go to the Run command. Type command.com and press ENTER. Then type ipconfig and press ENTER.

Default Ipconfig says internal error, request not supported, unable to query routing informat

I had this problem on a customers pc and tried all the fixes.
1. winsock fix
2. netsh reset
3. checking regkeys
4. pulling nettcpip.inf and reinstalling
5. checking drivers for nic card and putting in another one just to be sure.
6. finally found the tcpip.sys was missing from windows\system32\drivers
7. replaced this file and everything started working
hope this helps.

Thank you DragonWolf! I had the following error (also on a customer's computer):

C:\Windows\System32>ipconfig /all

Windows IP Configuration

An internal error occurred: The request is not supported.

Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.

Additional information: Unable to query host name.

I tried all the various fixes and nothing worked until your tip about seeing if the file tcpip.sys was missing. It was and everything worked once I replaced it and restarted.

Thanks!

Default The Answer -please Read

I also had no internet/network - ipconfig wasn't recognized and returned an error etc etc

I tried EVERYTHING for 3 days straight - all microsoft reset fixes, 3rd party ip fixing software - EVERYTHING.

I eventually found how to fix this problem + I was kicking myself how simple it was - spyware/virus had changed the tcpip.sys file and had some mechanism to resist attempts to fix the issue, so just delete tcpip.sys in system32/drivers AND the spyware backup file (of the same name but different file extention) the original circa 2004 tcpip.sys circa 2004 will automatically appear and everything will work.

SIMPLE!!!!!

ps next run the best antivirus-spyware you can find to get rid of anything else left behind

Default ipconfig fails in XP

I am having the same issue....when I run the ipconfig command, all I get back is a single line : Windows IP Configuration, no DNS or IP info at all. Looking for the cause of being unable to view webpages, IE says "cannot find server" even though the dialup network connection indicates connected, and I get the balloon that says "connected", and a data speed showing ....... I checked the tcpip.sys file.....it was there, I tried deleting it and, yes it did re-appear out of the OS, but still no joy!
Tried to reset the DUNS - TCP/IP using the netshell utility command, http://www.modemsite.com/56k/duns-reset.asp, but got no log text output. Any ideas where to go from here?

Default ipconfig fails

well I resolved this problem *fingers crossed* when I restart.. But ...

It probably had to do with enabling

REMOTE ACCESS CONNECITON MANAGER IS ENABLED.

(routing inst even running by my internet works after REMOTE )

I think that is the solution.

"Creates a network connection." ==> Imagine if that is disabled :P

C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs
Startup Type:Automatic.
