Default WINDOWS 98 UPGRADE AFTER FORMATTING DISC

The computer:Compact Presario
Orig came with Windows 95 installed and came with a restore disc. ( Sets it back to orig fact settings )
It was upgraded to Windows 98 second addition upgrade.
I made a start up floppy have the Restore Disc and the Upgrade Disc.
I also have a Windows 98 Disc that is marked "For new computers only"
The hard drive has been formatted.
After I insert the floppy and power up the computer what disc should I use to run set up?

Just put in the 98 disc, type e: (if it's just a start up disk, e stands for whatever cd rom you have).  Type setup and wait for the party to start.  Have fun

You can do what Savage said that would be the easiest to get you started.

If it were me, I'd restore for the original restore CD. This way all your hardware drivers etc are installed for you. Then run the 98 upgrade CD.

This way you do not have to figure out what hardware you have and spend allot of time looking on the Internet for drivers.

Unless of course you have all the drivers for your modem, sound, video etc already.

Just an afterthought.  :

If I got it right you have formatted the HDD
so an upgrade 95 to 98 would need an 95 install first
I would go for the 98 disc.
Have heard that the upgrade doesn't work as good.

I have been looking for a 98 upgrade though
for a 95 machine I don't want to format !
because I had it soo long and it would be such a hassle
to reinstall all the shit I got on it.

Bear is right, when you upgrade it keeps a lot of unnecessary temp and sys files that slow down your performance and clutter your hard drive faster. Not to leave out the mess in the registry, though, as that keeps about 20% of keys that you will never use once upgraded.

If you ask me, save yourself time, not only when installing but also when waiting on your comp, and just go straight to 98.

Yeah, dont use the upgrade. You can go into dos and deltree the windows directory. Then just use a startup disk and install. It's about the same thing as a fresh install, cept you don't lose everything else.

I still like formatting everything though. I do notice a remarkable difference in performance between just doing a fresh install. Probably because of allocation - but that's just a guess.

I like to format every two weeks or more often, but I haven't in 3 months because I am trying to see how long Windows XP can go without crashing...even though it is on a processor that supposedly runs below "stable temperatures." (also files get truncated because my comp has a mysterious restart problem)

I would think that might be voltage related, but you said your voltate is normal to me over icq. I'm not sure what it could be.

I never format. I have too much important stuff I can't move anywhere else. My drive is 40gig and currently has ~6gig left. and my second drive is 28gig and currently has ~8gig left :/
