Lock Picking
Hacking comes in all forms, and lock picking is one of the more useful and showy kinds. In one of the presentation rooms they have an area called lock picking village. Inside, guests can try their hand at the master skill and see if they are 1337 enough to defeat the tumblers. The area also shows tutorials throughout the day on the basics of lock picking and how to circumvent many different styles of locks. Live demos were also given on how to shim combination locks, in addition to escaping handcuffs.

Busting Myths on Failure With Adam Savage
This year’s Defcon held a nice surprise with the appearance of a geek TV star, Adam Savage. Famous for blowing things up and debunking the bogus on the Discovery Channel show MythBusters, Adam presented a heartfelt talk about some of his failures and how they have strengthened him as a person and made him the man he is today.
After his presentation there was a Q&A session with topics ranging from the controversial RFID work to more light hearted discussion about his favorite experiences on MythBusters (he has a thing for hot water heaters exploding). Adam’s closing remarks were nothing but praise for the hacker community and their continuing work in pushing the envelope. He also hinted that he will be returning next year for another talk and try to bring some of the other cast members. Following, was the obligatory autograph signing where yours truly was lucky enough to snag a signature for his private collection.
