Introduction

FSP Group has recently sent TechwareLabs one of their high-end power supplies, the Everest 80 Plus 700. FSP Group is a company that makes power supplies (and only power supplies) for various purposes. They're also the manufacturer of power supplies for various companies such as Antec, OCZ, and Zalman. FSP Group is also the leading manufacturer of 80%+ power supplies. I'll explain 80 Plus later.

The Everest 80 Plus 700 is a modular power supply that would be a great addition to a new rig. Here's why.

A Closer Look

The Everest 80 Plus 700 comes with all the necessary modular cables as well as installation instructions and some velcro to tie up the cables. All of the cables have a mesh coating for easy management. This power supply also features a tool-less design including thumbscrews instead of regular ones. The Everest 80 Plus 700 also comes with something rather different: coasters. In the box among the packaging are two coasters that you can rip out and use to prevent those annoying rings on your wood desk. It's cereal box toys all over again. The power supply also looks cool and has a blue LED like every other piece of computer equipment nowadays.

Our Test Rig

Testing

The Everest 80 Plus 700 faired well in it's testing. Tests showed about 1% deviation overall falls well into the specified conditions. ATX standards allow for a -/+5% deviation from specifications, but you want as little deviation as possible. With only a -/+1% deviation, the Everest 80 Plus 700 receives a good rating. The Everest 80 Plus 700 has proven itself to be very stable. While monitoring, we found little swagger from the results shown. A stable power supply will be easier on your components and will probably last longer. For some reason, our BIOS did not show the 5V value.

We used Orthos for stress testing and a digital multi meter for voltage testing.

80 Plus

One of the great things about the Everest 80 Plus 700, and 65 other FSP Group power supplies, is 80 Plus certification. According to 80 Plus:

"80 PLUS is an innovative, electric utility-funded incentive program to integrate more energy-efficient power supplies into desktop computers and servers....The 80 PLUS performance specification requires multi-output power supplies in computers and servers to be 80% or greater energy efficient at 20%, 50% and 100% of rated load with a true power factor of 0.9 or greater. This makes an 80 PLUS certified power supply substantially more efficient than typical power supplies and creates a unique market differentiation opportunity for power supply and computer manufacturers."

In other words, you are guaranteed 80% or greater efficiency out of any 80 Plus certified power supply saving you power and money.

Conclusion

The Everest 80 Plus 700 is a power supply that really holds up to it's specifications, proving to be a great power supply. It looks cool, is silent, and performs perfectly. The 80%+ certification holds true and we would definitely recommend this PSU to anyone looking to build a system featuring all the best parts. However, for $149.99, you may not be able to find a better PSU for the money.
