StarTech 480 Watt Silent Power Supply
Review by Jason Jacobs on 3/30/04
Power Supply Provided by Star Tech

Performance:

Performance when speaking about power supplies can be measured by how well a PSU can meet energy demands without losing voltage on individual rails. The Antec True Power 480 has separate regulators and circuits for each of its rails. This greatly aids in providing consistant power when energy demands increase. Additional demands from the power supply may be made when additional hardware is added, or when system load rises. In these cases some PSU's will supply the extra power without sacrificing consistancy and voltage, and some will fail to provide consistant power at the specified voltages.

Test System:
AMD 64 3000+
Albatron K8X800 ProII
1GB Crucial PC3200
Lite-On DVD-RW
Samsung 52X CDRW
Power Color 9800 Pro 256
(2) Western Digital 800JB

As you can see from the test system setup, this is a power hungy system. Tests were done while playing a DVD, on an overclocked system, with Quake 3 running windowed. The results are averages taken over two hours and 6 intervals were as follows:

  +12v + 5v +3.3v
Star Tech Silent 480 Watt PSU 12.01 5.01 3.27
Antec True Power 480 Watt 11.98 4.99 3.30

As you can see both PSU's did very well. The variance of the rails is very slight and not enough to declare one superior over the other. An enthusiast with a lot of hardware and power needs might be interested in the Star Tech over the Antec PSU for the extra amperage available at the 12v and 5v rails.

Lets take a look at how quiet and cool the Star Tech Silent 480 runs.
