Corsair Survivor 32GB Flash Drive

A Closer Look:

At a first glance, we see the packaging of the product, which proudly displays the Corsair logo in the top left corner, the 32GB capacity in the top right corner, and SURVIVOR centered just above the device.

Corsair intends for us to understand that it is, in fact, a survivor since it can withstand the following:

This shows that the Survivor device is Durable, Water Resistant up to 200m, Anti-Shock, and Plug-and-Play. This is not a new feature, it was displayed quite well in our previous review of the Corsair Survivor GT 8GB flash drive.

After opening up the packaging, we can get a good look at our new indestructable storage monster. The drive comes with a ball chain lanyard, a Corsair dog tag, and a USB extension cable. Take note of the rubber o-ring seal inside of the drive. This is what protects it against the elements and provides a tight fit inside its casing.

True Crypt:

When we first open the Corsair 32GB Survivor, we see that the drive is not empty. Included with the drive is a copy of True Crypt, which is free open source disk encryption software for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux.

True Crypt

Main features:

  • Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.
  • Encrypts an entire partition or storage device such as USB flash drive or hard drive.
  • Encrypts a partition or drive where Windows is installed (pre-boot authentication).
  • Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.
  • Provides two levels of plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password:
    • 1) Hidden volume (steganography – more information may be found here).
    • 2) No TrueCrypt volume can be identified (volumes cannot be distinguished from random data).
  • Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Serpent, and Twofish. Mode of operation: XTS.

Since this software is open-source, and can be downloaded from anywhere, we chose not to review this program. Check it out yourself!

Now let's get on to the testing of the device...
