Introduction

Along with your mouse, the keyboard connected to your rig is generally the only way for you to communicate with your computer. If you don't like the feel of your keyboard, you wont like to use your computer, and everyone's feel is different. Keyboards come in many different styles, and even have subdivisions of these styles. An example is the Logisys Ultra Slim Soft Touch Illuminated Multimedia Keyboard. Taken from the Logisys Ultra Slim Keyboard, the Logisys Ultra Slim Soft Touch Illuminated Multimedia Keyboard simply adds lights and changes buttons around. So the question remains, is it better?

Logisys's Take

"Simplicity, Elegance and Fashionable Illumination! This revolutionary two color (Blue/Red) character-Illuminated Keyboard can light up the characters either in blue or in red, just press the ILLUMINATION button located on the right top corner above the numeric keys. It is also an ultra slim, soft touch two-tone black keyboard which has all the frequently used multimedia and internet hot keys handily located at the reach of your fingers. The keyboard features large size ENER key and double size BACK SPACE, and extra size palm rest pad built in a volume dialer for media control. The ultra slim design with glossy black and matt black paint combination give it a contemporary look with elegance. Just like most of Logisys keyboards, the keyboard has a long cord, about 7 feet with USB and PS2 plugs. "

Packaging

"The Logisys Ultra Slim Keyboard came packaged in a box not much larger than the keyboard itself. The keyboard was packaged within a plastic bag and snuggled fit in the box to prevent shifting around. The only thing I did not like about the packaging was that it seems vulnerable of taking damage in shipping and handling." (Original Review By: Mike Lynch - Techwarelabs)

Packaging of the Logisys Ultra Slim Soft Touch Illuminated Multimedia Keyboard is exactly the same as it's predecessor. The slim box looks nice and is convenient for storage of the keyboard, however, shipping and handling damage seems imminent.

Testing

In testing the Logisys Ultra Slim Soft Touch Illuminated Multimedia Keyboard, one of the first things I noticed is that Logisys claims the dial in the lower right hand corner is a "built in a volume dialer for media control." On the original un-illuminated keyboard this is true. On the newer illuminated keyboard, the dial is used to control the brightness of the illuminated keys. Put side by side the keyboards seem to be exactly the same, however, some of the buttons have changed locations to allow for illumination controls. As previously mentioned, you have to be the one that likes your keyboard, however I feel that the layout of this keyboard is perfect. The keys are not too close, nor are they too far apart from one another. The best way of describing the feel is to compare it to a laptop keyboard (14.1" or larger). The Illumination control is nice to have, but I wish it were brighter. Even with the lights off, the light from my monitor can sometimes drown out the red and a blank white screen can block the blue keys. Some keys are brighter than others, indicating that there LED's with some type of plastic dispersing the light. There are also lights on the side of the keyboard that illuminate portions of your desk. Personally this is my favorite part, as this keyboard is to be used with my Police Case Mod (COPuter).

Conclusion

Everyone's feel is different, but so far everyone here at TechwareLabs likes the feel of the Logisys Ultra Slim Soft Touch Illuminated Multimedia Keyboard. The hot keys are extremely useful and easy to set up. The keys could be more responsive, and the illumination lights could be a little brighter but for the price, it cant be beat. At only $32.99 from NewEgg, the Logisys Ultra Slim Soft Touch Illuminated Multimedia Keyboard is about $12 more expensive than the un-illuminated original and relatively cheap compared to other similar illuminated keyboards. So, if your in the market for an illuminated keyboard, check this one out, you wont be disappointed.
