Seagate Cheetah 10k.6 Review
Reviewed by Andrew Chalfant on 05.20.2003

Test System:

AMD Athlon XP 1900+
Soyo Dragon KT400
512 MB PC2100 DDR
Asus GeForce 3 Deluxe
Adaptec 29320-R Ultra320 SCSI Adapter
Seagate 10K.6 Ultra320 ST3146807LW
Maxtor D740X ATA/133

The tests that were run are HD Tach, which is a very comprehensive testing program that can be downloaded for free. SiSoft Sandra's disk test and the Winbench 99 High End Diskmark test were also included.

The Seagate drive clearly defeats the Maxtor ATA/133 40 gigabyte drive. When looking at the graphs keep in mind the disparities between platter density and the number of platters - the Maxtor drive is less than one-third the capacity of the Cheetah - the Cheetah drive actually has to do more work to locate and stream information. The ATA/133/100 interfaces cannot keep up with Ultra320 SCSI at all. Keep in mind that the Ultra320 bus speed cannot be fully maximized by one drive - just imagine the speeds possible with a U320 SCSI RAID 0 array!
