Closer Look:

The Vid-2x is a simple design in a small package, so it doesn’t take up much space if you need to take it with you. Also, there is no huge power adapter to take with you.

The input side of the VID-2X shown here is the display port (or Dual Link DVI) and a mini USB for power The output side of the Vid-2X shown above is the same for both models of a single link DVI.

The Vid-2X is all about simple to use, compact on side and versatile. The Vid-2x has some dip switches on the side of it which allow you to change screen configurations:  stretching one display over two monitors or mirror one display on two monitors. There is also a display next to these dip switches which provides you a readout of what the Vid-2x has detected for the resolutions of the displays and if it detected an input.

Several dip switches to use, but according to the instructions you only use switch 1 and possibly switch 2. The rest of the switches are not explained as to what they do.  The display on the Vid-2x is shown here. The readout shows what is connected and what the max resolution is.

The dual monitors we had connected to our Vid-2X box are two Dell flat panel monitors with the max resolution of 1024X768. The Vid-2X displayed 3200X1200.

Conclusion:

The Sapphire Vid-2X is a very capable and very handy expander for not only PC users but also Mac users. The compact size and easy (no software required) to use setup was great. Also, there is no need to carry a power adapter with you either if you choose to take the Vid-2X with you. This expander could be used for such places as a store that wants to build a display wall which will display active content over couple of displays for a very low cost. The only one draw back we saw was we put the Vid-2X is expand mode (default) but wanted the connected displays to be turned 90 degrees (from wide screen to Portrait), but the only way this would be possible is if  we put the dual displays on top of each other which isn’t what we were looking for. The expand and mirror configurations are very useful, and you get the added performance of your GPU, instead of a USB driver. We don’t have a Mac system in the labs to show off the capabilities but we were assured that the original purpose of the Vid-2X was for Mac users to quickly and simply connect to their Mac books to the Vid-2X to display their content on dual displays.
