Default Linux Servers...

What is the lowest cpu and memory requirement for a fast, stable linux server?  Can i run it safely on an old 486?  Or do i need something a little bit faster.

Thanks

Keefe

I just want one to setup with apache, mySQL, and qmail to learn stuff.  Later on i might move all of my domains onto a faster better server.

I ran FreeBSD on a pent 120 running Apache, Postfix, MySQL, PHP yada yada for about a year and had no probs. 4 gig HD 64MB Ram. Sold that box for a few bucks and upgraded to a 750 these days.

Plus added a Sun Cobalt Raq4r to the arsonal. Needed .asp support doncha know. The things we do to make people happy.

I know I got off track. 486 will work if you arent going to use MySQL to much but personally I wouldn't go slower than a pent 100.

All I know is that a friend of mine runs a 233 mHz with 64 MB ram (I think), and it runs just fine.  Granted, he doesn't really do anything with it, and I definately wouldn't trust my site on there, but it runs.
