Default Hacking FD

We always hear about the bad hackers. The ones that destroy lives and disrupt companies. Love bug, Netsky, Cookie Monster viruses to name a few. But what do you all think defines a hacker and what divides hacker's further.

Are hackers.....evil? Or do they just have an itch to scratch?

... a hacker is anyone with the drive to learn the rules of something so well that they can break those rules that previously defined that particular technology.

and all this hype shit about bad black hat hackers and white hat stuff is lame. no one in business should ever hold a title that includes black or white hat or even hacker. that's so juvenile.

i don't know of any hacker that distroys lives. usually if a 'hacker' does something detrimental to a company it's because that company has wronged them, or they have some sort of need for revenge and show their superiority. and viruses are just more exploits that force companies to keep code secure. this brings the problem solving skills 'hackers' employ, some challenge.

I don't think I would necessarily label them as either...

I find that some hackers are out there with vengence only to subdue their need for attention. While others do it soley to satisfy an accomplishment. Never was hacking so maliciuos that they destroy lives, if anything, they set a minor set back. It's like learning to drive a 5-speed, but intentionally buying an automatic vehicle; why learn it if you can't find a way to apply it?

precisely. hackers do it for the thrill with no malicious intent, as opposed to crackers who are out to seteal software, identity, vandalize, etc.. look at Kevin Mitnick. he did it for the thrill, never gave out the software or anything, just wanted to do it because he could.
