That Dash PC stuff is prety interesting. When I get my Volvo 850 HPT, I think I will definately work on a project similiar to that. It would be aweful tempting to play while driving though. I'll have to put something that will prevent me from doing that. I noticed that they use Linux only now, which I don't think I will do until gaming is improved on it. XP or 2000 are powerful enough for me. (Yes, that's a lie; nothing is powerful enough in my eyes)

I agree with you in part. Windows is undoubtedly the better platform for gaming. After all, most games developed don't even give thought to being on non-windows platforms. Linux gurus will tell you that it's so much better, and you can just run Wine, www.winehq.org or something similar to get windows apps running on linux. I happen to disagree with that, becuase I have experience using all of the above software. For someone who doesn't have a LOT of background programming and using linux, wine is a daunting task to get working.

That being said, the reason I use linux is purely based on the ability to hack at the source and build something I want that isn't in there yet. For example, a mod like the auto-on/off setup that the dashpc guys, www.dashpc.com have would be somewhat more difficult to set up under windows, and probably much less reliable, based on how windows runs scheduled tasks.

anyway, I saw a whole other thread of linux vs. windows, so let's not get started on that here. besides, that's not what I'm saying at all. I say, use what works for you. It just happens that linux works for me.

I have a old 486 Compaq LTE 5100 laptop computer that I removed the LCD from. I am wanting to use the LCD on my PC. I think this would be really awesome to pull off! I have heard it is possible with the proper tools and some great effort. I am wanting to learn how to do this to make my idea work.

Like I said I have a 10.4", SVGA, CTFT which was made in the 90's so obviously its a older LCD though still in superb condition. I do not understand the function of each cable coming from the LCD and would like to.

I thought it would be easy as cutting off the cable to a desktop monitor and wiring it to the LCD, then using a low power adaptor with adjustable power settings to acheive the proper power supply to the LCD... Though obviously its not that simple but I would like to learn how to get this project working.

each laptop is different dumbass, you aren't going to find one wiring diagram for all laptops. get your multimeter out or find specific wiring diagrams for the laptop you have or are going to buy.

hint: dvi has analog pins--red blue etc.

Hey guys, my sister broke her laptop. The mainboard was pretty damaged so i was thinking why not turn her LCD into another monitor or a TV? im a relativley new modder and wanted to know if there is a part in the laptop that can be modded to be a controller or anything that would help convert it. It was a 14" inspiron 1100. I dont have it in front of me at the moment so if im on to something please help me out :wavey:

how did bonebox do it? did he just bundle the color wires together and make it work or did he use a converter board to do it? anyone know?

i'm not entirely sure that bonebox actually did this mod. he posted up promises of pictures, then never posted them, and he hasn't even posted anything since then.

I am so looking forward to your howto on the lcd screen conversions. I have about 7 screens laying around and am looking around for what is the same size/specs for this project. Could you imagine a whole wasll of these suckers. We could put the LCD TV guys out of business. lol

Yes I've been thinking of doing this for a while and now that I really want to do it, it's been very discouraging...

I called and talked to a guy at ICP and he said that if your card supports DVI it would be easier. My question is this: If lcds are digital and DVI sends a digital signal then why couldn't you just take a DVI connector (like rip one off of a broken computer or maybe you could buy one) and wire it with the laptop cable and then plug it in directly?
