I would say 6 Gb is not fast enough ;)
About cooling, don't be obsessed about 8). Ppl have weird ideas about cooling lately

Cheers

P.S. I knew guy that had W98 installed on i386/66 ;)

that is pretty cool chef, my uncle knows a guy who for a video editing maching bought a quad-processor p4-2.2 Ghz xeon processor machine with over 1 gb in ram and about 300gb in harddrive space. :o

Re: Im new here...

CMon, he just wanted to check if that's possible.
I've installed once W95 on i386/4Mb Ram and it worked somehow.

About Aoshi's uncle, Xeon for video editing ?? Isn't AMD much better for calculations, 1 Gb RAM -> not impressive, I can stick 1.5 Gb in my antique board
I hope he've got some ultraSCSI HDDS, cause storage is the most important part of such a system. I'm woundering what VGA card he used  ;) And what SW too ?

Cheers for Aoshi

Re: Im new here...

The Xeons can have up to 2048k cache at 1024k one
start  to get good performance
A PII-450 with 512k cache with an FSB of 124 or 133
gives really good performace doesn't hang as easy
playing games as
a celery 466 @ 832  with measly 128k cache
and gives better performance.
Cache is nice but also what makes the xeons expensive.

Chef..

If I recall AMDs are better a normal office routines.

However for something with loads and loads of calculations, the Xeons with the extra cache kick ass..

You havent been wowed until you have seen a redering server farm of afew dozen quad Xeons..(make a pretty good CS server too....hmmm...)

about CPUs

Hm, isn't AMD with less cache and much less functions, works faster on heavy calculations ? massive cache also has disadvantages ;)
And how about Alpha for servers, isn't that the thing.

Re: Im new here...

What about multi-processor servers of Athlon MP's, that will mess up just about anything (except Cray's ;D ). You can load many gigs of ram on there, load a 3DLabs WildCat III and some RAIDed SCSI HD's and you're set.

BTW, anyone know how much WildCat III's are and where you can get them? I think they are around 3-4 thousand

Re: Im new here...

I can set you up with a 3DLABS WILDCAT III 6110 VIDADPT ALL for $3159.00 US if'n you're really interested. The going rate at most stores is closer to $4,000 or more. Let's just say I'm not greedy and I can drop ship it to you.

Re: Im new here...

Oh thanks, but just speaking hypothetically and just wondering price. sorry if I got any of your hopes up.

but on with the hypothetical speaking: Now, not only are the AMD better per clock cycle, but for servers the new MP 2000+ is faster running at 1.667Ghz while the XEON is at 1.600Ghz

Talking about cpu's, check this baby :

Install Solaris on this one and brag for years ;)
