Nice. Cable is much faster then DSL. Now, Gigabit....Mmmmmm...Optical.....

Jason425 09-27-2003 10:01 AM

yep cable owns dsl only cuz the dsl companies are cheapo.. i have gigabit lan on my mobo.. but makes no diff other than the name for now.. in fact its a hassle because XP doesn't have the drivers

vee_ess 09-28-2003 01:40 PM

Jason425 is right, DSL is far more potent, its potential just isn't taken advantage of. With regard to 56k, the upload speed is 33.6k on V.90 and 48.0k on V.92. The download is rarely ever 53.3k, the max speed for 56k according to FCC specs, but is slower for other reasons. The TCP that we use today reduces the speed of transmission of a packet to 50% of the previous attempt if the previous attempt failed. That, along with congestion, gives us speeds lower than the real life speeds we are connected/rated at.

gnogtr 09-28-2003 05:08 PM

Yeah. Bellsouth will never use dsl to its full potential. They (the phone company) are a monopoly and have no competition in the dsl market, so they don't have to speed it up....

Jason425 09-28-2003 07:20 PM

i'm on crap local phone company dsl and i have no other choice, no cable and no other dsl gets here

gnogtr 09-28-2003 10:03 PM

Same here. There is another company, I51 that does dsl, but it's easier to have it all on the same bill.

Now..... I have a question! :shake:

Where can I get a GameSpy ID to download Counter-Strike Full Version from FilePlanet.com???

That’s all folks….. I really appreciate your help :)

Jason425 10-03-2003 06:47 PM

you have that comp.. go buy cs..

Mr. Sharpy 10-10-2003 11:03 AM

Look, if you people want to pay money to a company that has been greedy as your average oil company since they started making money with gamespy, that's your perogative. But what about the fact that these people _force_ everyone they host to put files exclusively on their sites; or the fact that they actively give services AT A LOSS to game develeopers to trade for exclusive downloads...

What we have here is a trend that will sooner, rather than later, force people to pay money to download FREE files. Period. Unless people make a stand and say "I refuse", that's our future. And you won't be able to blame me. I had a mod on planetunreal. Just to piss them off we put exlusives on unreality.dk. I have refused to use gamespy or fileplanet since fp required signin. I guess i'll sink with my ideals, but i'll have a clean conscience.

gnogtr 10-10-2003 01:45 PM

You're paying for bandwidth. I paid $5 for a lifetime subscription to gamespy, so I'll never have to pay again, but that was the deal then, now you have to pay a monthly fee, but I don't. As for Fileplanet, I only pay $6 per month. That's not a lot for the bandwidth that I use up.
