Overclocking

I have a Radeon 9800 Pro (HIS Excalibur) and I want to overclock it. What do I need to do so and do I need a VGA Silencer or something other than the stock cooling fan? I was actually gonna order a VGA Silencer because they're quiet and they look really cool.

One more question for you techies out there. What's the differance between my Radeon 9800 Pro (HIS Excalibur) and a Radeon 9800 Pro (Saphire)?

xckid082488 09-02-2004 01:00 PM

Is this a good one? http://www.jab-tech.com/customer/pro...&cat=93&page=1

I'm sure it will cool it fine, but I was able to get a very nice overclock on the stock fan. I have it watercooled now. I got it to 430/365 on stock fan, of course I had ramsinks on the ram.

xckid082488 09-02-2004 02:10 PM

Jason425 09-02-2004 02:16 PM

edit's are good.. and yea, triple posts make us

don't push it too far on stock cooling, but it should oc a bit

gnogtr 09-02-2004 02:20 PM

There is difference between the two, but remember they are by different companies. It's not much I'm sure. I've dealt with Sapphire in the past and I like them, so that's who I'd recommend.

xckid082488 09-02-2004 02:26 PM

sorry 8)

Is it bad to open the side of my computer while it's running? Cause right now the side panel is off and I'm staring at the beautiful components

If this is your card than you don't need any extra VGA cooling, your set for good. ;) But if its not than go for a zalman cooling heatsink. To overclock go to www.Guru3d.com for good freeware overclocking applications for ATI based cards. :sunglasses:

xckid082488 09-02-2004 02:34 PM

No thats not my card... My card is the one without that big cooler on top, it has a fan with a heatsink surronding it

gnogtr 09-02-2004 03:08 PM

You have a standard 9800. The cooler on it is fine. I tried the Thermaltake Giant 2 once, but I got better cooling with my stock cooler.

Jason425 09-02-2004 03:14 PM

dude.. you apologize, and then you double post.. :/ come on..

if you get a zalman vga cooler then get some patience and an hour or two, because they take a while to install... though they look awesome once done.

Bythe time I read your post I ended up buying an Arctic Cooling AVC-1000 VGA Silencer Rev.3 from www.crazypc.com for 15 bucks plus 7 for shipping which I thought was reasonable

lol
zalman VGA coolers dont take 1 or 2 hours to install

just mod a stock athlon heatsink and you have a kick ass cooler that is better than arctic cooler VGA silencer

Jason425 09-02-2004 04:50 PM

the silencers are supposed to be pretty good. Hope you don't break anything while installing it! ;)

and it took me that long.. partially because I didn't see that the gold things were actually two parts and that you're supposed to unscrew the first half to make em 2.. I also put the back heatsink on backwards TWICE.. let's just say it was lots of trial and error..

gnogtr 09-02-2004 05:06 PM

I can have one of those things put on in 15-20 minutes. I've done it way too much. Oh, and J425, it's time to go to the doc about that bad vision ;) I could see that from a mile away....20/20 in one eye and 20/18 in the other.

Jason425 09-02-2004 05:15 PM

I was too busy trying to RTFM for once.. that's what I get.. :/

xckid082488 09-02-2004 07:35 PM

What scores did you guys get on PCMark04? I just got 3585

gnogtr 09-02-2004 08:37 PM

xckid082488 09-02-2004 09:47 PM
