Linux Can Give Kids an Edge!

"Have you ever thought about turning your kid into a computer geek? While we might not want to go quite that far, as savvy future professionals, they'll no doubt need wide ranging computer skills. Linux offers youngsters a richly featured, comprehensive, hands-on environment that they can use to learn about applications, networks, servers, and how to make it all work together. If you work with them, you can even start to instill some of your hard-earned business acumen, as well.

word my friend... word. :sunglasses:

 do any IT pros except some server admins/programers use linux for anything? Maybe in the future it'll be a good thing to know to the point that we should expose kids to it, but for now, it's far better to focus on windows and computers in general, which have much more useful purposes, before you venture into complicated and difficult concepts.

Prometheus 09-20-2004 12:32 AM

Linux is FAR better than windows in the short time I had a chance to use it. It never crashed and was super fast!

But it is hard to use and programs to make it easier to use are coming out all the time.

Jason425 09-20-2004 12:34 AM

yea, here's how it is...

windows: most program support
mac: most artsy stuff
linux: most stripped down aka fastest

I don't use my comp for artsy stuff or to be the fastest, so the program support of windows is for me... and 98% of everyone else...

StinkyMojo 09-20-2004 12:36 AM

but once you do use it, you see certain things in windows that can be VERY annoying. Versatility, Power, Speed... its all here.. btw pro which distro are you using?

Prometheus 09-20-2004 12:36 AM

Same. Linux is best for gaming and servers...but few games are on linux

Jason425 09-20-2004 12:39 AM

um.. stinky.. Versatility means basically that you can use alot of stuff on it.. that's one of linux's biggest weaknesses... and pro... how can it be the best for games, when few games work on it.. You mean, it has the POTENTIAL to be the best for games.

StinkyMojo 09-20-2004 12:43 AM

No it IS the best for games as in you get better FPS. And i know what I meant by saying it is versatile.

Jason425 09-20-2004 12:45 AM

well it's not versatile at all... so dunno what you were thinking there.. and it's not the best.. it may perform the best, but if you can't play most games at all, it certainly isn't "the best choice for the gamer"

StinkyMojo 09-20-2004 12:49 AM

of course its not the best coice for the gamer, and it is versatile... if you sit down and actually use it instead of guessing, you would know :browsmiley:

Jason425 09-20-2004 12:55 AM

mac is more versatile than linux.. in fact, i'd rather sit down and learn a mac, at least they're rideculously overpriced, are slow, and are still unix based while looking half decent.. In fact, I can justify it because their comp division is separate of their monopolizing jerk i-pod division.... so step off my grill and quit flip flopping.. I might have to call you Kerry Jr. ;)

StinkyMojo 09-20-2004 01:02 AM

:boohoo: i've had enough of explaining things to uneducated linux noobs.. hey pro! you still here?! it's you trun for a lesson. Dr . Mojo phd has retired, and will live off social security for the time being.. >:)

Jason425 09-20-2004 01:06 AM

saying dr. mojo phd is redundant, since you need a phd to get the title dr... I have done the explaining this thread.. and a real doctor doesn't need social security to live anyway! Fraud! :firedevil:

Jason425 09-20-2004 01:09 AM

you would have had to started college at age 10... considering you were in 4th grade at that point.. I doubt it.. and not to mention you can't get SS until 63 or something

StinkyMojo 09-20-2004 01:14 AM

nope.. Mojo began college at the age of 16.. but at Yale. Harvard dropped me cause i couldnt keep a 4.3 gpa.. I was getting a mere 3.9. But good for Yale! they picked up a potential free agent from the market

Prometheus 09-20-2004 01:14 AM

u have a PHD mojo?

funky

im still here for 10-15 more mins

Jason425 09-20-2004 12:44 PM

when a 4.3 gpa becomes possible, we'll talk.. and pro.. he's kidding... or lying, take your pick.. gg ivy league school.. wouldn't suprise me if mommy and daddy paid 100% of that too.. :wavey:

StinkyMojo 09-20-2004 01:33 PM

4.3 is possible.. if you take more than 10 classes a quarter.. mojo recieves extra GPA points.. Moj is still debating whether to go back to Yale this Fall and teach.. He also has a teachers degree in sociology.. now please.. leave Professor Mojo alone..

Jason425 09-20-2004 02:15 PM

no it's not possible to get a 4.3.... you don't have a degree in anything except going down green tubes and eating mushrooms... ;)

StinkyMojo 09-20-2004 02:52 PM

Mojo doesn't have a degree for that .. it comes naturally ;)

Jason425 09-20-2004 03:13 PM

As does making up 4.3 gpa's and doctorates?

StinkyMojo 09-20-2004 03:45 PM

Mojo has all of those.. and an estate in fiji.

Jason425 09-20-2004 03:47 PM
