usb jump drive

i think this goes here... but this is the first time i have asked a tech question.... so i am not sure......

question - I got a 256 mb usb jumpdrive for my birthday.... uhm..... this one :

http://www.lexar.com/jumpdrive/jd_secure.html

and my home pc is xp/redhat and all other pc's that i would normally use it on are 98se or better, but my computer here at school is windows 98..... which requires a driver, but only driver they have is for SE (yes of course i tried it and no it doesn't work) so i have no idea what to do..... i've been looking around and pretty much every other jump drive i have looked up has the same prob..... only supported on 98 SE or better..... anyone know of any kind of a generic driver or anything like that?

StinkyMojo 10-28-2004 12:43 PM

no sorry, i run into your problem myself a while ago... but no avail... :(

eviltechie 10-28-2004 04:06 PM

what kind of school stil uses win98?
lol

abby schools

cherrypie 10-28-2004 04:27 PM

you would think for a tech school they would have up to date technology...... but NOOOOOOO they still have win 98.......

*growls*

also 98 is not quite obsolete why don't they have drivers for it? they have 98SE drivers but not 98 drivers.... i know these systems aren't too different would it have been that difficult to make drivers that work on both systems?

Uranium-235 10-28-2004 04:38 PM

98 is obsolete :P (all versions)

anyways, I think one of the big updates between the original and SE is support for more USB stuff. So you are kinda out of luck. Everyone except people with crappy computer should stop using 98 by now :P

oh yeah, and welcome back Cherry, maybe you'll stay a little longer this time :P

cherrypie 10-28-2004 04:43 PM

lol a little longer?

and i can't do anything about my school using 98 lol...... however apparantly a couple other people here have the same kind of drive..... wonder how they dealt with this prob......

there must be a solution..... and i know am not the first person to deal with this problem.....

Jason425 10-28-2004 07:42 PM

nobody supports 7 year old hardware.. thus noone supports 7 year old software.... and especially shouldn't use it...

Budgets usually prohibit organizations from updating on a regular basis. Schools inherently have this problem which is an issue that is way off topic.

Try this link. You might find what you need to get it working.

I'm not trying to be cynical or anything. I know how it is in the "REAL" world. I've been a Network Admin for over seven years and have done computer work for over a decade. I've installed/upgraded computers and networks from homes and small offices to a seven state area for the Tennessee Valley Authority. I can say with confidence that I've seen just about everything there is to see and the most important contributing factor is dealing with old operating systems and hardware.

For someone to consider themselves an expert without having knowledge of older equipment and software is a complete joke because it's out there and in a great abundance.

Just try taking the A+ certification without knowing the old stuff and see how well you do. I'm pretty sure how you'll do if you have no exp. with the older stuff.

ET, I know you know your stuff. I've known you for a long time and respect your knowledge. However, I can't say the same for others that frequently post here.

Jason425 10-29-2004 11:41 PM

I do have the A+.. so I know enough of the old stuff.... so take the flamethrower and point it elseware...

Not only that, but I stated the case at my school.. I know in some places where voters routinely reject initiatives for funding might have outdated equipment.. but it's kind of the fault of that community... but this whole thing is irrelevant...

vee_ess 10-30-2004 11:41 PM

You are right, most of this thread is irrelevant.

Since you cannot use JumpDrive Secure drivers on anything other than 98 SE, you may as well try to use some other Lexar drivers and tools in hopes of at least basic functionality.
