New california legisltation that went into motion last week may cause P2P software companies large legal problems unless they create a way to control whats going onto their networks.

Darn... you just barely beat me to it Uranium-235...

The bill is going to get shot down as unconstitutional once they try using it. There are way too many loosely ended areas that it doesn't define, apparently.

holy crap that guy is moving. anyway.... how do they enforce this on decentralized unliscenced software? or better yet... open source....

Jason425 01-20-2005 04:29 PM

sarcasm isn't sarcasm unless it is decided that it is by the reader - therefore it's the writer's job to make sure sarcasm is apparant. Sarcasm is typically displayed through emoticons such as ;) Since it's in the eye of the beholder, sarcasm is a risky thing to use in writing. [/lesson]

StinkyMojo 01-20-2005 05:03 PM

dictionary.com: A form of wit that is marked by the use of sarcastic language and is intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule.

so stop acting like you're smart and making up your own defs.. [/owned]

/me laughs at 425s use of html tags and stinkys failure to notice. then wonders if that really what he meant by / .. because he didnt use <>.

/me deduces that converstaion is too confusing.

StinkyMojo 01-20-2005 05:46 PM

/me laughs at dragon for thinking forums tags are HTML tags ;)

Jason425 01-20-2005 06:14 PM

I did make up my own def... dictionary.com doesn't concern itself with forum etiquite... and yea.. I know more forum code than html... so [/stfu]

Dragon 01-20-2005 08:28 PM

Decentralizing it just means that they have to find new ways of tracking who's doing what without having the option to just get a subpoena, such as following the information provided by trackers. Trackers aren't hard to get information from, either, since they have to be readily available to everyone to be efficient.

As for open source, that just means the source code is free to look at by anyone. This actually makes it easier for the RIAA and others to try catching the people swapping illegally. Now, for them to write software to track people, they can easily see how to interface their own software with the software used by file-swappers.

Jason425, I disagree with your definition in part because some of the best sarcasm isn't understood by the victim and isn't intended to be.
