Windows ME
 

I want to know what kinds of problem people have been having w/ this os.  Tell me your system and what you use it for.  If you've never had a problem with ME tell me that too along w/ specs and use.  Thanks.

I like the user interface of ME but compared to WIN 98SE's stability I'd rather have WIN 98SE. I recently got an HP Pavilion 7865 and it came with ME.  Lately, my roommate has been using it more than I have...hehehe. I'm planning on using it mostly for video editing and such. That'll have to wait until this quarter comes to a grinding halt in the coming weeks though.

The problem that I see most of the time is IE locking up.  I don't know, for some odd reason it keeps locking up and I'd just have to either restart or hope that it recovers after crashing.

All in all, I guess ME is okay but I stilll prefer WIN 98SE over it. It could just be because I'm so used to 98SE...

I have not worked with Windows ME too much, but from what I have seen it is just Windows 98 with more "fluff."  If you are looking for os that is very easy to use and has a lot of neat feature use windows me, but if you are looking for something much more stable and a bit faster go with Windows 2000 Professional

Yeah, I totally agree with you on the "fluffiness" of ME. I have another computer that is running Win2k Pro and I'm completely happy with it. I get the better interface of ME and the stability of NT. Very nice! However, I find that Win2k is just a tad bit slower than Win 98SE. What's your experience with that? Do you find 98SE faster or slower than Win2k?

In the instance of my computer here at home i found that windows 2000 prof runs faster that windows 98.  I have a PIII- 450 and 256 megs of ram in this machine.

On older systems windows 98 will probally run slower since win 2k likes more ram and faster processors for better performance.

I agree win2K is the better os (depending on what your doing) well maybe not better persay but more relable.  And in some cases it runs slower or faster depending on your system but for your average user they won't encounter win2k.  It wasn't really designed for the common user but more for the office and home business.  As for the fluffiness factor, I agree but fluffiness is almost a Windows TM.  Ever since 3.x systems the fluff has built.  Windows ME is just the latest incarnation.  But as for the symtoms of a suffering Windows ME they are always the same - "locks up", I have experience the same.  As for you Hulaboy with your new HP I also have a new one. I got the Pav 6746c one of the first thing I had to do was replace my LT Win modem it seemed to bog down my ENTIRE system however once I replaced it with a USR everything seemed to perk up and lock ups seemed to deteriorate.  Any explantions other that what may seem to be the obvious?  Anyone?

I have built five systems using ME with an Abit BE6-II mobo, PIII 533, and 128 megs of ram.  These have all been very stable with few problems.  I did have problems with modems but I switched to 3Com and these went away.  On OEM systems I have found if you shutdown some of the extras that are loaded at start-up will help with lock-ups as well.  For me HP scanner software causes more than its fair share of lock-ups.

Hhmm...that's something to look at. Of course, I never use the modem since that HP and two Macs have wireless access through an Apple Airport Station. Perhaps I'll take it out all together and see what that does.  Uh oh...perhaps I won't do that because I just took a look at it right now and it seems that the modem is integrated with the game port and also where the speakers plug into. That's an odd setup...

Yeah a lot of new computer manufacturers are trying to save money by having many of the hardware features built on to the motherboards.  Usually there is a was to disable the built-on modem, the option would be either right on the motherboard-- like a jumper that disables it, or a option in the BIOS.

A clean install of ME is fine, as opposed to an upgrade.  However, if the System Restore feature is turned on, ME will, over time, become very slow and ponderous.

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 running a P4, 1.4ghz & 256mb ram.  It came with WinME, and I'm starting to wish I'd saved a few bucks & had Win98SE put on it instead.  I 've experienced alot of browser lock-ups, not just in IE, Netscape doesn't seem to fair much better.  I've been seriously thinking of repartitioning the HD and trying out 98se on another partition to see how it performs.  My most frequent error seems to be with KERNEL32, I get errors with it at least once a day that cause whatever browser I'm using to shut down.
A couple of folks have suggested I opt for going to Win2000nt, but then I've also read posts on other bds similar to this one that some people have problems with that o/s also.  I personally think you're better off going with a more stable system like 98se, since it's already got the bugs worked out of it.  As for MSFT's new brainchild, XP, well before I'd put that on any of my machines, I'd wait for them to get their security issues worked out.  To learn more about this check out this link from Steve Gibson, developer of Zonealarm & ShieldsUP.  http://grc.com/dos/intro.htm  You'll learn why hacker types love this new o/s

WinME is for people who plan on doing a lot of multimedia stuff.  I had it for a short time.  Nothing but trouble for me.

I don't have anymore problems with WinME since I uninstalled it and put Windows98 in its place.

ME is really just 98TE (third edition)
It is built on the SAME kernel as 98.

Recently I have been getting "REGENV32 has caused an error" when trying to shut down WinME, prior to that it was running fine, never had a problem with it, but now I might just put Win98SE back on, Stability is the key, but oh how I do hate the very time consuming reformat. Anyone got good instructions on using fdisk for a truely clean hdd to put Win98Se on, reformatting still leaves stuff behind which takes up room on the hdd, from my understanding. Please correct if I have been improperly inform.

Whenever I do a full re-installation of Win98SE I delete all the partitions with FDISK and recreate them again. Just format them and that should be pretty good enough.  I know there's a command that reinitializes the drive so that it is just like the first day you got it.  I had to use that one time and boy did it work.  I'll try to find it for you and I'll repost it on the board.

98 any flavour is fine, but my pref lies in w2kpro

Haven't dabbled with XP yet but I am sure I will have to before all too long.

ME and dialup issues general modems and DSL modems just has been a nitemare for our ISP

Almost as bad as MAC users - no offense ment but as of late the MAC boom is back and oh man I wont go there  :D

I think that Windows ME is very pretty and pleasing to the eye, but the crashes and lock ups mean that im a Windows 2K guy all the way.
However I apprecciate the fact that most OEM computers come with 98 or ME and alot of people arnt willing to fork out the $$$ for 2K simply because the dont need the extra fetures or stability.

ME's stabilty is not anything to get all excited over.  it has problems shutting down when i tell it to, so i have to smack it from time to time.

ME is fine (for a red headed step child) it's just that when it was first released drivers compatibility was the biggist issue.

I have ME running on my old Pent 166 that I use for my Classic 50's Radio Broadcast http://www.wizbonespc.com:8020/listen.pls

It's been up and running 24/7 for about 6 mo. No problems. Course that's all I use it for but the most common problems that my clients have had has been driver related.

One other thing I notice on the HP boxes shipping with ME if the Dialup Adapter gets hosed you have to reinstall the OS to recover from it. There is no easy fix that I have been able to find. I could be wrong but haven't found it yet.  ::)
