Windows Xp.... :(

At first when I installed windows XP I thought that it was a well designed operating system. I am now starting to have my doubts.  It seems like every day my computer get less and less stable.  I get those stupid error reporting things something ten times a day.  I have not installed any new software since I initially set it up.  I wonder where the stability length setting is in windows xp...  Has anyone else eXPerienced problems like this with their installations of xp?

Re: Windows Xp.... :( ho ho ho

Hah !

M$ is dying, they are out of ideas ;)  Anybody remembers anything about WinME (a.k.a. Win98 3rd ED) ?? Well, I remember all the trouble it made and at the end we recommended to ppl to stick with Win98. I still recommend that.
If you wish to stick with M$ OS Win98 SE is the answer for desktop OS. W2000 is much better, but it's not for fun (I personally use both).

Now XP, well excuse me, that's another trick to sell the same crap with new shiny look. I also recommend you ppl to check this article >>  ;)
http://grc.com/dos/xpconference.htm

So you want to try something new ? That's not XP for sure ...

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

Chef,

I lean pretty much the same way you do. I am not at all impressed with XP and recommend either 98SE or 2000 myself.

I don't play much so I use 2000 more than 98 but when "fixing" issues with clientelle PC's I formost install 98SE.

Checked out your site. Looking good, could I persuade you to check out http://www.webdevnet.com ?

Keefe,

I think XP in general is a weak "OK" and that you'll be better off stepping back to an older ver. Most my customers with XP call me often for this and that and basically are not happy with it.

To have such instability and such without "doing anything" doesn't work for me. I have only sold one copy of XP and I cringed while doing it  :o

jinx 03-04-2002 09:48 PM

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

Well, I also think WinME was pretty much a waste of time and offers no real computing experience or advantage. Also think it will be an orphan OS. Not many copies were actually sold over the counter and most out there were shipped as such, which is what I have. I have not seen a single advantage over 98 in the year I've had it.
Thought about upgrading to XP but too many complaints/problems  keep surfacing on it and decided to wait awhile longer.
Still a lot of non-available drivers for various devices. But I sure would like to see MS have some competition. Real competition.

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

I tried 2k. and had problems. so screw it. 98 has been the most stable OS for me yet

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

Well I for one love XP  :P

Ive had it installed since the day after it was released and have had no problems at all....ah well.

Then again im using XP Pro.....maby the Home edition is crap....I dunno....all I know is that Ive always loved 2K, and XP (IMHO) is just a pretty 2K with some extra features.

Chef 03-05-2002 04:48 AM

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

Not exactly 2K.
XP is wasn't built on 'NT technology' and it's more like 98 with some extra creapy features (and huge secutiry holes ;)
Win2000 is still the best from micro, cause NT OS was always better then Win OS.
They called it XP, cause they were out of names after ME and still had to flood market with sth ':[+]

Xp has nothn to do with W2K

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

Actually, Windows XP was built off of the winnt kernal, so therefore it has a lot to do with it.  Basically, windows xp is a glorified win 2k with a whole lots of changes.

Whatever  ::)
Just sounds odd to built sth on NT kernel, but not NT family OS. But what can u d0

sleepy ;|

Keefe 03-05-2002 07:25 PM

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

Those chose the NT kernal for its stability...

I would have to admit that windows 2k is a very beautiful operating system.  I ran it before xp with minimal problems and crashes.  I think that is what i am going to switch back to once i get everything backed up.

later...

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

I agree, XP is all talk but when it comes down to it that's all it is.  I have had it installed for a while and it was lovely for a while but then the same problems started happening, more and more errors, now it even crashes occassionally.  Another thing I noticed is that it doesn't shut some programs down completley.
We call XP :Big Brother Bloatware 8)

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

I was going to install XP Home tommorow and get rid of win2k. sounds like a bad idea from what you all are saying...is it really so bad or just people with good experiences just aren't posting?
so should I install it? ???

mlhlmh 03-07-2002 12:03 PM

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

I do agree that 98 SE is a reliable OS. I now have W2K on my daughter's machine and have recently loaded XP Home on my own. I've never had any problems with W2K and don't know why I went for XP except that I got the full version for $100 c(less than I payed for W2K which was $150).

I haven't had a chance to play with XP much as I can't get the VIA master bus IDE drivers to load. They won't load off the CD and the ones from Biostar's website (I'm using a M7VIB) won't load either. XP says it can't find the darn things, anybody have any ideas?

Chef 03-07-2002 12:25 PM

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

Sounds odd  :o
Installing XP instead of W2K ??? For what reasons exactly ?
If you want to try everything, OK, I'm agree with that (to pay for it ? ho ho ho ;)
For my personal opinion it wouldn't worst my time ...

But why not to simply install it on another partition ?

Cheers
Chef

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

I upgraded my daughter's machine from 98 to W2k and switched my own from (can't say upgraded yet) from W2K to XP Home. As far as paying for it, the price was cheap enough and I prefer to use licensed software.

So again, does anybody have any ideas on the IDE driver problem I spoke of in my last post?

Chef 03-07-2002 12:56 PM

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

That's the reason number one NOT to jump to new shiny OS !

To get drivers for WinME from the beginning was a nightmare (ATI cards not supported, Voodoo drivers crashed, USR modems and so on ...).
I'm pretty sure it's going to be the same way with XP, cause programming drivers is pretty expensive, so some HW manufacturers will NOT have drivers for WinXP for long time.

Now about your problem mlhlmh ...
What's for you need VIA master bus IDE drivers, if it works without it ?
As for W98 you don't need it (I don't know bout XP, but my guess it's all the same). More than that, if you'll install the wrong thing, serious skills would be required to remove it.
Enjoy what you've got ;)

Good luck
Chef

P.S. I prefer to use licensed software too, but what can you do  8)

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

the best thing that you could have is a dual boot system consisting of win98se and win2k.  if anyone has done it before they know its easy to setup and that way you have the best of both. the 98 for gmaes and win2k for jsut about everythign else.

jinx 03-08-2002 11:21 PM

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

mlh,
You may could benefit by running the Win XP compatibility test, go to the MS Windows XP site and download it, other software sites had it up for awhile, an abbreviated ver, can't remember if it was ZDnet, tucows or what.
MS sure did push that test to all who wished to install XP. As noted above, lots of vendors have not debuted any XP drivers, and some may not, as they are under no obligation to do so.

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

Thanks Jinx,

The Biostar M7VIB is on the XP compatability list, it has recieved the logo certification.

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

two things:

try www.driverguide.com with the
   username:    drivers
   password:    all

if there are no XP drivers, use your win2k drivers, but not NT4 drivers

Chef, XP is based on the NT kernel as it is NT 5.1 like 2k was NT 5.0

dru_peacock 03-11-2002 05:14 PM

i l0ve xp

in my opinion, i actually like xp compared to 98.

when it was was first releasesd,xp got a bad rep for bugs and compatibilty issues.
for instance,geforce2 drivers had problems (no native xp drivers),but a simple Detonator download fixed that.
ok,some older programs dont like xp, but there are/should be patches to fix this.
XP does seem kind of baby-ish though with its simple, user friendly interface and irritating help menus.

god bless bill gates and his ever bulging wallet

Re: Windows Xp.... :( ):

I dissagree with that blessing thing, but I do agree with that new look thing, that's the best thing to attract customers. New shiny look, and great help, so you'll know how to fix things ;)

It's like to repaint your junk, so it would drive better (lol)

I cant get Empire Earth to run on it in XP. I haven't tried it in anything else though. it just brings a black screen up then disappears

Re: Windows Xp.... :(

try right-clicking the games program icon, select properties, then compatibility mode and set to windows 95 or something. ???

MY HUNDREDTH POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answers instead of opinions please

Any chance of getting an actually answer to an issue or a suggestion to fix the current problem with the exception of installing another OS?
I'm having an issue with XP not recognizing my VIA master bus driver as well. An XP solution or suggestion would be much appreciated.

Don't bitch about stability and Windows. Those don't go hand in hand. Use Linux if you want stability you freaks, some people like all the features though.

Grinnin Reaper 04-10-2003 06:50 PM

i would reinstall the 4-1 drivers, you should be able to get the latest from the mobo manufacture site.

Jason425 04-10-2003 07:45 PM

I've used 98, me, 2k and xp pro.. for the "home" (or in other words dumb) computer user, ME is recommended over 98 (because of system restore and other safety features) XP has been my OS in use ever since i got it. One important note - if you do not tweak it like crazy, and do not maintain it on the regular basis, you will not be completely satisfied, but when maintained, it can be a joyous XPerience... 2k.. too much like 98 for me.. (ugly) and compatitbility sux.. no comment on speed between the os's as i haven't noticed any difference from OS, your maintenance procedures and HW determine speed.

Marine 04-11-2003 05:51 AM

i love windows xp.i've had it on this computer from the day i got it and i have had no problems.........zip...none.so idk why you guys hate it so much besides the fact that microsoft has some crap in it because they are just out for the money but i never have any problems with this and it is the most stable OS i have used plus my dad has it and he has no complaints either.
