What brand/version of Linux?

I am looking to download Linux again. I have had a rather unpleasant experience with RedHat 7.2 because of a rather common problem with the introduced version of GRUB.

This time, I want to know what brand/version everyone likes and what their experiences have been. Thanx.

Re: What brand/version of Linux?

I've had some unpleasand trouble with Mandrake, after the install it won't boot to GUI cause the X-Drake (I think) interface keeps crashing.  I've got it working a few times but then I still have trouble with it crashing on shut down and other bugs.  I'm about to try Red Hat but hate to here it didn't work for you.  Did it give you the choice of using Lilo as the boot loader?  Works great on my computer haven't used Grub.  I am really pleased with http://www.lycoris.com/.  Only install program I've seen that lets you play Solitare while it's installing.  Haven't used it much yet but seems like a good product all in all.

Re: What brand/version of Linux?

Actually, I did opt for LILO as I do know a little bit about that, but it still installed GRUB instead, and when I tried to change it, it accepted the settings every time but never changed. Plus, it crashed on me once, which hasn't happened to me with 2000 or XP on this motherboard. These are all known glitches in that version.

RedHat 7.3 is supposed to fix all that and I have heard many good reviews of 7.3. I would still rather stay away from RH for the time being: only have time to download one on a 56k connection and not too many cd-r's right now.

Caldera allows you to play Pacman while it installs!!!

Re: What brand/version of Linux?

I would go with Red Hat or FreeBSD, I use both currently.

There are more ports availabe for RH than BSD but I still like them both.

I broke my cherry in BSD and Only use RH becuase of the need to use Chili!ASP

Both are free to download if you have patience. Am download 7.3 RH currently. Just about done with ISO 1 Should be done by Sat or Sun hopefully.

Re: What brand/version of Linux?

I have used Redhat, storm, mandrake, and debian.  By far my favorite is mandrake.  It is the easiest to configure and install.  If you are a beginner, I would definetly start out with mandrake.  Once you learn to use it a little better you can then customize it however you want.

cheers...

HA HA HA! He is one of two things.

Jazzman 07-28-2002 07:18 PM

I too, use mandrake. I had escapades with Redhat 7.2 and mandrake is Much easier to configure, and much easier for us linux n00bs to understand. (from my point of view)

in that, I mean I have actually managed to make it do what I WANT it to on some occassions.

8)

Smoked1 07-28-2002 08:52 PM

I would have to agree. i just installed RH7.3 and I can't get samba working but on Mandrake it was easy

vee_ess 07-29-2002 01:51 AM

So I'll download Mandrake 8.0 then. But I have begun wondering if it is even worth downloading it because Linux doesn't support my modem or sound card. Please advise if you think it would be worthwhile anyways. I'll start on downloading it in the meanwhile.

Smoked1 07-29-2002 09:45 AM

you never really know till you try. If mandrake wont work try rH7.3.

vee_ess 07-29-2002 12:57 PM

There is no way I can download 2. I'll just get someone at school to download RH for me if Mandrake doesn't work for me.

RH 7.2 is having a lot of problems for me...not just a few, so I'll only go to 7.3 in case I have to.

TheRogue 07-30-2002 02:40 AM

my first linux experience was in phat linux which went on top of windows (i only tried it as it was ~300mb) but didn't do much in it

my first serious attempt was mandrake 7.2 but i kept having problems with CDROM drive (wouldn't let me look at it no matter what i did)

abit later i managed to get mandrake 8 which worked mostly fine but then i kept f00kering things up (uninstalling glibc... a kernel dependency... is one of the little things i managed to do)

ive used slack8 on a 486 which i networked to dualboot xp/mdk box, i got it working in XP so i could ssh from xp to the slack8 box to surf the net through the xp box, but i couldn't get anything working in mdk (not even being able to ping it)

i then tried mdk8.2 but didn't enjoy it, abit too n00b for me :D , at my 3rd LUG (linux user group) meeting i got a brand new SUSE8 box set (courtesy of SUSE giving the LUG a copy) and i got to be the first to try it, ive had it on over a month but have only gone into it periodically due to being busy with school and now its the hols and im playin alot of games which i need win for :(

SUSE8 has a nice install and is easy to use and configure so i would definately recommend it... though i used the box set which is 7CDs/1 DVD (i used the dvd), as i said i haven't used it much but i will get around to it soon (i hope!)

hope this helps

Get Mandrake it the easiest to install and it doesn't have as many problems as RH does. If u really want to download Mandrake go ahead, but I have an easier and less time consuming way of getting it, Go to http://linuxmall.com/shop/index.php3...OFTWARE&sort=2

They have FreeBSD for $1.98.
or try
http://www.elinux.com/NavBar3.jsp?Navid=70998000
look under eLinux

vee_ess 08-03-2002 04:14 AM

Sweet deal. Thanx for the link. Now just have to conjer up a few dollars.

Mac_forever 08-04-2002 01:50 AM

Uranium-235 08-04-2002 01:53 AM

Google > Yahoo

Mac_forever 08-05-2002 02:18 PM

HEY EY

redhat on kde is good.. mandrake on gnome.. anything linux is better then windows 98/me/2000

eviltechie 09-24-2002 11:29 PM

not really

it all depends on what you need it for

there are some tiny linux distributions too that can be fitted on a floppy

for some workstations, win2k still rules with its popularity and support

i luv linux nevertheless
and i have a tux in my room

but i cant just go around and start propagandas saying linux is the best
because there is no best in the world

there is always something better

Calhoun 09-27-2002 12:08 PM

I use RH7.3. It has changed a bit since RH7.0, so a few of the commands are gone and have been replaced with new commands. I use Ximian gnome for my desktop which also lets me use red carpet express which is the windows update equivalent. Red Carpet will let you subscribe to software channels (for free) and install/download software and the latest patches. :)

TheRogue 09-28-2002 02:53 AM

Mandrake 9 is out now, http://www.mandrake.com , not used it myself yet, and probably won't for the time being

I also recommend Debian, http://www.debian.org , im using this on my firewall box atm, installs quite nicely, and apt-get 0wns :D

eviltechie 09-28-2002 11:17 AM

how big is debian?

trend 10-01-2002 09:32 PM

My recommended distros:

total n00b: Lycoris
beginner: Mandrake
average: Redhat
up to and beyond pro: Slackware

eviltechie 10-02-2002 01:39 AM

thats a good list and well put

i dont like slackware much though
probably because ive never got much time to spend with it
so i find it hard to use...

my fav is redhat

Mandrake

I'd say go with Mandrake. I just installed mandrake9.0 and I am very happy with it. It comes with nice packages and it is easy. Much easier than RH. I have a buddy with RH 8.0 and when he has an issue it is a bitch to fix. Fixing an issue in mandrake is a whole load easier and if you are running an nvidia display card hardware acceleration is easy. Even wine is easy.
I also just put mandrake onto my ftp server and so far no big complaints.
For beginners and advanced linux gurus mandrake seems to be very popular and I can see why...!!
