Never saw this comming...

Remember those video overlay problems I was having? I figured it was my GF2 at first... Well, that was just blown away...

I just installed Windows 2000 server on my backup computer. Well, when it tried to load windows, the W2K startup screen just stays there(the one with the logos and the little progress bar...) It was possible to shut the computer down, so I know the system wasn't completely locked up. I figured this was just a bad video card, so I took out the GF2, and sure enough, it boots to Windows fine. BUT, as soon as I begin browsing the interent, I notice many pictures are scrambled! I try a video again...scrambled as well!

Well, I'll try a few other things...not sure what else could cause a problem that is replacable...

I would change the video card settings in your bios.

The_Other_One 08-18-2002 01:51 PM

Didn't work... I don't think I mentioned this, but my other card was a Voodoo3 3000 PCI, while the GF2 is AGP... I stuck JUST the GF2 in there, and now shows video, but I still have the problem with video overlay...

Could a powersupply be the cause of this? I don't have any extras to test it with, but that is the ONLY thing different sence the problem began...

Smoked1 08-18-2002 02:18 PM

What power supply are you using? Have you been using the latest drivers? Have you tried as the only device in your system?

The_Other_One 08-18-2002 02:46 PM

Not sure what PS is on it...some generic 300watt...

Yes, I downloaded all the latest drivers for my video cards and motherboard...when I had 98 on it, I even upgraded media player and DirectX.

I guess you ment, have I tried it with only the video card? Yes, I ran it with only th GF2 and only witht he Voodoo3, but still got the same results...

Smoked1 08-18-2002 02:56 PM

I suppose you could try a new PSU but the one you have should work OK. Other than the BIOS I don't know what to tell ya.

pictures are scrambled? this an AMD K6/7 machine? maybe it's one of those darn defective K6/7's

The_Other_One 08-18-2002 03:02 PM

This is a Duron 850. The processor has been through a lot...but it still should work, as it was fine before the new PS.

If I can find another PS, I'll try it. Maybe I'll take my whole computer to the place I got the PS, and see what they say...

????

What board are you using..?

The_Other_One 08-18-2002 06:00 PM

OK...here are my system specs...
Biostar M7VKB(VIA KT133 chipset)
Duron 850MHz
128M PC133 RAM
Chaintech GF2 GTS AGP -OR-
Voodoo3 3000 PCI
40x CD
3.2G HD
Onboard sound

I think that covers everything you need to know...but just ask if there's anything else...

jinx 08-18-2002 06:11 PM

Can't remember if I responded to your other post or not, but you don't say which board is PCI and or AGP, remember that when you install a PCI graphics card Windows will give it priority as the PRIMARY graphics source. Then you have to get in control panels device mgr and disable the other card.
Windows will only recognize one Primary card, the other will be Secondary.

Smoked1 08-18-2002 07:07 PM

Also check www.amdmb.com forums to see about any compatability issues that there might be. Sometimes an older driver needs to be used.

The_Other_One 08-18-2002 10:08 PM

Jinx... I explained the Voodoo was PCI and the GF2 was APG in the post right above your ;) Well, the primary was set to AGP. Either way, even with a just one of these cards in there, I get the same results...

And Smoked1, I'll double check for incompatablities, however, I seriously doubt I'll find anything, as the computer USED to work...

jinx 08-19-2002 07:31 AM

Yes you did, but wasn't there when I clicked 'Reply' and prepared my responce, and I posted back without checking first.

The_Other_One 08-19-2002 04:16 PM

Well...should I just make this Duron a server? It seems to run 2K server quite well, and I don't need good video for server. Maybe I can find an old AGP card to stick in there, and just replace my P200 server...

Smoked1 08-19-2002 05:05 PM

I don't see why not. That's what I would do.

The_Other_One 08-19-2002 06:59 PM

Sigh... well... I guess I will. I origanally built the for my friends to play on my network with me...it acutally did quite well to of only cost me $45...oh well. I'll post a picture of "where I compute" once I make the new arrangements.

Smoked1 08-19-2002 07:55 PM

Sounds good to me man. A server is always good.
