What are your hobbies?

Was talkin this over w/ keefe one day and i was just wondering what all you guys do besides compute? My hobbies include working out (strength conditioning), soccer, hanging out, and of course, chix!

P.S. appropriate stuff only, lol, we all know how the computer guys do their thing...

Uranium-235 08-28-2002 11:42 PM

Well, my hobbies include playing tennis, dowhnill skiing, mild mountain biking, web and graphics design, bowling, eating at Perkins. I could consider camping and water skiing hobbies of mine as well, but it's been quite a while since I've done either, so I'm not sure if they count.

TheRogue 08-29-2002 04:22 AM

im an air cadet (UK air force cadets), we do shooting, flying, gliding, adventure training while learning about the RAF etc...

soccer, cycling, hanging out, reading (fave author tom clancy) and TV (less and less all the time.. especially as cable is being taken out my room today)

mad_ 08-29-2002 06:42 AM

I spend a lot of time frisbee golfing as well as rollerblading. I spend the rest of my life playing unreal tournament and chatting on irc. Oh yah and I smoke big fat joints.

Grinnin Reaper 08-29-2002 07:33 AM

I used to hunt and fish a lot but not so much anymore. Just started picking up paintball. Work on trucks and go off-roading. Build models and want to get in to R/C aircraft. Also a Fire-Fighter (volunteer). Want to start repeling after my last rope rescue class. Oh and horse back riding. And modifing anything electical or mechanical around the house.

Propig 08-29-2002 08:04 AM

I go bowling, fishing, camping, and canoeing most often these days, but I enjoy snorkling, sailing, horseback riding. I started taking flying lessons, but I had to stop because it was too expensive. And I love to do woodworking, painting and other arts and crafts type of stuff between everything else. And to top it off I can play music - flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, guitar and some piano. Is that everything.... yep that about sums it up. OOPS! almost forgot my most favorite thing to do... Drink BEER!

(My mom made sure I was a well rounded person. I think she thought I would marry a rich guy one day and needed all the social graces)

I'm not typical. I hate sports - as they are given. I actually don't have any problem with most sports. But it's not about fun anymore. Or to put it another way, Peoples' idea of fun is not nice. Commercial sports, in my view, is about profits for a few and mindless distraction, and worse, for the regular sports fans.

But I like darts. I just can't have a dart board in my present dumpy bachelor apartment.

I live in Toronto. I'm unlucky in not having friends who I can call up and do things with. And I don't have wheels. Therefore, I have to get out and entertain myself. But I'm not a party person. I refuse to take up the sport of drunkness and drugs are for losers. Therefore, I like the simple things, like movies and coffee shops. But all of that is getting difficult to do. Movies are an arm and a leg.

So are some coffee shops, now that I think of it. However, I like Starbucks (the shops, not the corporation). They are the best at making a relaxing environment, which I, as a harried city person, appreciate. Find a smallish Starbucks shop, where the service is friendly and good and they don't crank up the tunes, and you've got yourself a nice oasis in the jungle city. Starbucks at least goes for the neutral tunage, and it's actually good background music.

Other than that, I enjoy stuff that I guess quite a few others would consider work. I like to know what's going on, and so I'm always reading. I also like to write, although my serious writing has stopped for the moment. And I like fooling around on my computer and stirring things up in discussion forums like this.

But the web's a great source of info, for sure. I just wish I had a buddy or three around who knew computers etc who could help me flatten out my learning curve. Everything computer related I know, I only know minimally.

I also wish they had more computer games that I could play. I won't play games where I'm required to shoot, shoot, shoot, kill, kill, kill. Those are my principles. And such games don't interest me anyway. I like adventure games like Zork Nemesis, which stir the imagination. But right now, I can't afford to explore what's out there, and there's too little information available on the kind of games I like for me to know what I might like to try. My kind of games don't get made, and when made, don't get reviewed or talked about much. My all time favorite game, for action, was Descent. But Descent's creators (probably not all) weren't in it for the love of it, and they've split up and won't talk to each other or carry on with the Descent vision, which was kind of going mainstream anyway.

Aemon_ 08-29-2002 12:08 PM

i like cars; the faster the better, working on my truck, photography, bowling, reading, weight training, baseball (softball), music (listening to and playing). i like camping, and hiking too, but havent done either in quite some time.

later.

wizbones 08-29-2002 12:23 PM

im pleased to see all that have responded to this thread, for it has greatly increased, being that i posted it what? yesterday! kudos to keefe though for the ingenius idea. I thought this might be kinda interesting in gettin to know all my fellow posters in this forum. Unfortunately, i have not reached that age yet to get out and go "party"...which im sure most of you are familiar w/. I see tons of you like to sport...camping, sports, and exercise. Its kinda cool to see very intelligent persons who have extra curricular activities. Although, i dont think i could live that long w/ out my computers...what do u guys think?

eviltechie 08-29-2002 10:18 PM

u have a captain's chair in ur house?

i have an Enterprise D ship schematic mouse pad

i didnt know they sell blue prints
cause they dont use white ink on blue paper in the 24th century

what is missing from my life is an uniform

if you can be any one in the Enterprise D, E crew or the DS9

who would you be?

i think i would be Data or Bashir

and i cant live 3 days without touching a comp
i need a laptop!

Uranium-235 08-29-2002 11:01 PM

I would be...

((me - 50lbs) && (me + 30 I.Q.))

no I have captains chair software. I can explore the bridge of Voyager, Enterprise-D, E, Defiant

Keefe 08-29-2002 11:06 PM

In my free time, the little that I have, I try to get outside. I love camping, swimming, hiking, cycling, running, and just about anything else that has to do with nature. I try to take a canoe trip into the wilderness at least once a year, however this year I did not make it :(

When I have to star around town I usually watch movies or hang out with the lady friends. I can also be found dancing at the local dance clubs. When I am not trying to pick up the girls I am at home on the computer working on the website.

Propig 08-30-2002 07:34 AM

I love Nascar

Every few years the Daytona 500 is on my Birthday and I go stay on the infield. You have not experienced partying until you stay on the infield of a race track Saturday night before the big race. It is GROSS! Sunday morning there are people laid out on the ground, over the hoods of cars, hanging off the mobile homes... It is truely something different.

By the way, the 2003 500 is on my birthday I will be there!

accurateimage 08-30-2002 04:44 PM

MIK3 08-30-2002 05:38 PM
