What search engine do you use?

What search engine do you use the most?

:)

Dogpile.com

MIK3 09-07-2002 04:03 PM

In order: Google, Yahoo, Altavista, MSN, Teoma

Omega 09-07-2002 05:36 PM

I believe Yahoo is powered by Google, but regardless, I still use Google. If I'm searching for address/phone numbers, it's anywho.com, for locations it's maps.com, and for hardware it's pricewatch.com.

:)

I personally prefere dogpile for it compiles data from about 14 different search engines per entry, has been my fav for awhile.

vee_ess 09-07-2002 08:30 PM

I use MSN and Google about evenly. But I do prefer MSN because I you just type it into the address bar.

MIK3 09-08-2002 12:18 AM

Yes, I too like that feature that comes with MSN. I believe what AI was talking about roughly is the same as Teoma, is it not?

eviltechie 09-08-2002 12:47 AM

i use Yahoo because it is powered by google
and at the same time, i can see what new movies are out or whatever is "hip" at the moment

I do beleive that you can set any search engine to do all of the built in searching for IE 6.0. Does anyone remember how to set this?

cheers...

eviltechie 09-08-2002 03:07 PM

theres a google bar u can dl

but i just set yahoo as my home page so when i want to search, i just open new IE or click home
i dont mind 1 extra click

vee_ess 09-08-2002 03:14 PM

The easiest way to make it search using another search site is to go through the registry, and I believe it is under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

eviltechie 09-08-2002 03:26 PM

oh that

its in Software under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

then go to "microsoft"

then "Internet Explorer"

then "search"

the default values for customize search and search assistant should be
http://ie.search.msn.com/{SUB_RFC1766}/srchasst/srchasst.htm

i gotta find a guide on what value to put in for google or whatever engine prefered

eviltechie 09-08-2002 03:31 PM

found this thing which is a little simpler
but that manual regedit way only works for IE6

its for the search button on ur IE toolbar

so here is the universal way for IE5 and 6 is the easy .reg way

thats right
heres the .reg file
http://www.google.com/google.reg

eviltechie 09-08-2002 03:32 PM

and if u want to change it back

http://www.google.com/default.reg

eviltechie 09-08-2002 03:38 PM

sorry for so many msgs :spam:

but im just too lazy to edit

from the results of the vote
we can see that "any techie worth her salt knows that if it ain't Google, it ain't worth a hill of beans"

this is a good thread topic, keefe

09-08-2002 03:43 PM

hmm.. i can't vote... and i haven't voted yet :(

09-08-2002 03:43 PM

because i aint logged in (this is rogue btw)

eviltechie 09-08-2002 03:45 PM

AND HERE IT IS!

MIK3 09-09-2002 12:39 AM

Nice deal...i think they make alot of those bars for most any site, if the site is that dedicated to their work.

eviltechie 09-09-2002 12:42 AM

yeah definately

btw
www.astalavista.com is my fav for cracks and fixed executable

hehehe

vee_ess 09-10-2002 08:10 PM

...astalavista is also good for learning hacking...

That's a good way to customize the search service. I still like doing things through the registry, myself. Anyone know the specifics? I know its possible - I used to do it.

eviltechie 09-10-2002 08:48 PM

nah
it isnt very good for hacking

its only good for kiddie cracking and greyhat screwing

my favourite security site is www.blackcode.com

vee_ess 09-11-2002 08:30 PM

Yeah...you're right...it isn't very good for hacking...just checked it out. I remember it was once a good site. Now it is empty.

eviltechie 09-11-2002 08:34 PM

yeah

also id like to discourage people from hacking
please dont do it

it is just purely lame

unless you are revealing a government conspiracy that we all should know, go ahead

but dont crack and mess with people's personal computers just to screw around
it is the lamest thing to do with a computer

eviltechie 09-11-2002 08:35 PM

just to clear out any misunderstandings before it happens

im not directing this at u vee_ess

im just trying to tell the grey hats to stop it and get a life

vee_ess 09-11-2002 08:36 PM

I agree. If you're hacking your own machine because you are board, that's one thing. Hacking other's property is morally wrong...

MIK3 09-11-2002 09:52 PM

Yeah...for a while I always wondered on the hacking world, the pitiful one it was, its almost a lure into evilville, if you know what I mean. I personally have never done it before, but know ppl that have. I am guessing that when a person does get in, then get that feeling of "I've won!". Kinda like pinging a person a whole bunch of times if u dont like em...in that sense...
