HSF - whats your pick?

SO, i've ordered alot of new parts online. I bought a Vantec CCK-6040H which i have read reviews on, its a decent cooler, but nothing hot shot-ish. SO i thought i'd do kinda a poll, what is you guys' pick for best HSF (I hope to be doing some overclocking on this rig) I would say, price range <30$ US.

The CPU is a AMD 2000+.

Also- how can I tell if my CPU is manuf. on the .18 or .13 manuf process? is there a simple easy way?

So if any of you have opinions on HSF units that don't cost more than half of my CPU price, post here.

if it is thoroughbred then it is .13

but its not
so its .18

Thermaltake Volcano 7+ can be found easily in that price range

but if u want hardcore overclock
look into globalwin's CAK-38
or the Swiftech MCX462-U if you are willing to spend a little more

Jazzman 09-09-2002 02:50 AM

lol- how do you KNOW its not? i just am wondering if you can tell like from the serial or sth on the CPU it self, like i know it sez on there when its made, but... i dunno.

:)

I love my hcc-001 cooler master heat pipe, keep my chip running very cool and looks like a million bucks. Also your 2200+ is a .13

Jazzman 09-09-2002 09:37 AM

its only a 2000+. and how do you guys determine!?!?!?!?!?!?

accurateimage 09-09-2002 11:13 AM

:)

Oops sorry it was late and I misread it, I though you said you had a
2200 + so that means it is a .18

Jazzman 09-09-2002 12:15 PM

so, a 2000+ is a .18, and a 2200+ is a .13, whats that make a 2100+? a .155?

accurateimage 09-09-2002 01:57 PM

The 2100+ is a .18 also, the switch happened at 2200+

Jazzman 09-09-2002 02:40 PM

aha, gotcha. 5 posts later, you finally answered my question :) thanks

I picked up a Vantec CCK-6040H and am really unhappy with the quality of the Cooling. My xp2000+ would only go up to 143 mhz and under load was running ~52c. I am getting a Hedgehog type W with 2 fans on it to try out. We'll see how that goes, hopefully better. also- do you think P/S could effect stability/overclocking very much? mine is an enermax 330w its pretty nice, I think... it has dual fans and all... any ideas why I can't get my board above 143 stable? (besides heat)

What are you running for ram and board..?? Also try out the heat pipe #hcc-001 mine works awsome.

Jazzman 09-10-2002 08:42 PM

Corsair XMS3200 256meg CL2.5 in 32x8 config. (with heatspreader)

Abit KX7-333Raid w/newest Bios on abit website.

accurateimage 09-10-2002 08:56 PM

hmmmm... your system is running very hot for overclocking, what kind and size of case do you have it in..? My 2100+ overclocked at 1810mhz only runs an average of 37C.

eviltechie 09-10-2002 09:12 PM

the PSU is good enough for the job

hedgehoge might not do the job properly
and it is often loud

i really suggest swiftech's MCX462 if you have the bling bling

also you would probably want to get the temp under 50c before doing any overclocking

and voltage should be added to provide more stability
but this is a very dangerous task
do some research before you do anything
and dont come back and complain that your CPU died
because i gave you a warning that this is very dangerous
and can damage your CPU permanantly

do some research
and go to the CPU Database in http://www.overclockers.com for a start
it will give you an idea what settings and setup ppl are doing with their 2000+
