My first case mod... hmmmm... mine was installing 4 fans in a compaq 400mhz pos because it got so hot I could feel the heat on the outside of the case and the power supply fan put such hot air that would make any hair dryer ooh and awh with envy....

my first mod was the keyed power switch on my home built computer. Pics can be found elsewhere on the board. :nod:

you gotta start somewhere, I was auto mechanic and an electronics tech before i got into computers so I had a bit of a head start. If youy really want to get some kudos you gotta post some pics, I almost never get to post pics 'cause I DON'T HAVE A DIGITAL CAMEREA, but that's another story entirely. used a dremel to make a nice big hole for my 10x10 (inch) electric fan.

8) I got this generic case from a computer store for about 25 bucks. It comes with a 300 watts power supply and a keyboard. I used a grinder to cut a hole for the side window, another on top. Find myself a plexiglass and a rubber tubing for the edging and rivits. Painted the whole thing black. Stuff the thing with a Pentium II 333 Mhz, Not bad for a newbie huh. :biggrin:

My first mod was to stealth both my cd-rom and my cd-rw.....my faceplates are so beautiful it would be a sin not too

I cut a side intake blowhole for a 120mm fan.
The hole I cut was my first attempt at using a Dremel, and originally it looked egg shaped - it wasn't even round!! :shake:

I tried covering my bad workmanship with blowhole trim, and a chrome grille :/ but I later went back and did the job properly.


I've since painted the case, bezel and drives, and upgraded gfx card, sound card, speakers, keyboard and mouse 8)

In 1983 I wired a real ASCII keyboard to my Timex Sinclair, replacing the vinyl keypad. The following year I wired a Radio Shack push button as a reset switch on my Commodore SX-64.

I graduated to modding PCs only recently. Last month I cut four holes in a steel case for side-intake/top-blowhole fans.

I cut two 8mm holes for fans that i installed on top and side than a window :)

should blowholes up top blow air out of the case or suck in?

assuming that side panel blow holes are sucking air into the case
and on the back you have fans blowing out of the case

Generally speaking case design has cool air enter from front and bottom to exit top and rear. This is the path that add-on fans should enhance.

I've seen some cases with airflow paths that are not front-to-back or top-to-bottom, but this is the path that most case manufacturers design.
