Help...NTLDR missing on xp!!!!!

Hi all and thanks for reading..I was deleting..so-called junk from my xp system and when I rebooted it comes to NTDLR missing and will go no farther,,has anyone experienced this? PLease help!

I have a compaq 5410us with xp on it

Thanks

I've never experienced this particular problem, but if you boot off your Windows XP cd, you should be able to run a Windows XP repair. This *should* solve the problem.

The file ntldr appears to be stored in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 (for me at least, running Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP-1). Alternately, you could boot to a command prompt, and then put the file ntldr (from someone else's computer) on a disk, and copy it to that location...and see if that solves your problem.

hi.. Thanks for the response...My pc did not come with an xp cd..only the recovery cd..do you think ofice max or office depot has the cd?

thanks

Uranium-235 12-10-2002 09:25 AM

Yes they usually have have XP Pro/Home

I know this is kind of a a stupid question...but is there a disk in the drive when you try to boot? I know 2k Said NTDLr is missing if you had a non-bootable flooppy disk in the drive and it tried to boot off that

bridget36907 12-10-2002 11:57 AM

no...no disks in the drive..but since you have mentioned it ..it seems as if my drives have changed..like for my cd it is drive A and for floppy it is drive b..i thought it was different

Uranium-235 12-10-2002 12:04 PM

ah. that might indicate your bios might have reset something (which could be the problem here)

I don't know your level of technical knowledge. But if this makes sense do it, if not, say so:

Go into your cmos configuration, look for your bootable devices, and make sure IDE0 (this could say HDD-0, or another similar name) is listed as a boot device

bridget36907 12-10-2002 12:45 PM

ok I can go into my bios by pressing F10 on start up..is this what you are talking about?

Uranium-235 12-10-2002 01:46 PM

yeah

bridget36907 12-10-2002 04:47 PM

ok I will try this when I get home today...Thanks!

Omega_Work 12-11-2002 07:03 PM

My bad. The file 'ntldr' is just located in the root of C:\.

bridget36907 12-12-2002 09:57 AM

Hi Thanks for helping but everythin seems ok in the bios..I ordered a quickrestore cd...I already have the recovery cd but It seems to not e working..I noticed today that the writing on it says to be used with quickrestore..so I guess the y go hand in hadn..maye thats why my recovery cd did not work from the beginning..has anyone restored thir xp system and have any advice on it?

administrator password?

hi,
i faced exactly the same problem you discussed in this topic.
was almost able to solve it but once i got into this recovery console
i had type in a password of the administrator which i dont know.
i tried several keywords that i guessed (also tried to just enter without a word) but couldnt succeed.
but notice that i inserted a win xp pro cd even though win xp home version is installed. i had borrowed the home cd to somebody else.
and i am afraid that i cannot recover my data.
do you think with the home version cd there wont be this question?

bridget36907 02-03-2003 03:55 PM

hey..just leave the password blank and try that..I made a bootdisk to get into my pc..but I enede up recovering it so I would not have to turn it on everytime using the boot disk.I got some quickrestore cd's from compaq for like 10 bux..and it restores it to the way it was when purchased..but while using the boot disk to get in i saved all my info on cd's..I can get you all the contents on my boot disk but it will be later when i get home..I guess oyu will have access to a pc? so e-mail me at bridget36907@yahoo.com if you can't find one on the net!

ok later

mook 02-05-2003 08:48 AM

hi,
are you talking about the boot disk which was described earlier in this topic?
well, it's a notebook which is not mine and ever since it has to boot from the floppy to get in to windows xp.
so, when i insert the windows xp cd (the version differs) and get into the recov console it asks me fot that passwd of admin.
and i also tried it with blank but it wouldnt let me in.
the thing is that i do not want to recover the pc to the state when it was purchased. i just like to get into windows without having this boot disk inserted all the time. because without the boot disk it says ntdlr missing.

cheers

bridget36907 02-05-2003 06:37 PM

yeah I had to use the boot disk also until I recovered m y pc :/

the only other way to do it is to have an xp cd and tell it to repair it..I just saved all my information to cd's and recovered tehn re-installed everything!

SunDevil 02-07-2003 06:22 AM

I think i'll be force to format the computer cause if i tell it to repair it... all it's ok... but when I reboot... i got the message another time... :/

Hi, i know, this discussion is really old but just in case sbdy is watching it now:

There is another way how to restore your XPs -without cd
You need to get into console and here extract the backup from i386.cab (use "help" command if you don't know those strange commands console uses). This should restore backup and everything should work (i haven't tried, just heard about it, I repaired it by reinstalling  )

NTLDR loader missing on XP - McAfee!

Loading new software, this error message appeared when rebooting. Previously had removed the "free" McAfee virus offer that popped up every time the computer was turned on. It must have had the missing file, because when the computer (Fujitsu) was restored to a previous backed up day, it notified what file would be restored. Ta-Da.

Where may I locate Recov. Console with NTLDR missing?

Hey can anyone tell me how to access the recovery console in XP Home edition? I am currently suffering from this very problem and I'm certain it can be fixed from there, I just don't know how or where to locate it.

Thanx

The resolution

I had the same problem, here the FIX

Boot the W xp CD, en E for repairconsole
To replace damaged ntldr and ntdetect.com you can copy fresh files from the XP CD using the COPY command. At the Command Prompt type the following
COPY D:\i386\NTLDR C:\
COPY D:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:\
(d: = cdrom, or whatever you use)

type FIXBOOT ...

Reboot and ENJOY :)

Non-bootable floppy causes this message on XP Home

Thanks to Uranium-235 - I had this problem on XP Home today and did a Google on 'ntldr missing' and found this thread. Sure enough, I had left a floppy in the drive when booting.

hi......this worked for me.........

Thank you Anders!!!! I recently had a virus that killed my harddrive. I put in a new one and installed XP. The bootfile was never right on the new harddrive and I've been booting with a floppy as I was to busy to try and find out what was wrong. I think there may be something wrong with the new harddrive or the virus did something other than kill by old harddrive. Anyway today I was installing Picture It 2000 and the computer rebooted right in the middle of the install. Then came the "no NTLDR" message. I tried what you said to do and it still would not work. I was able to add those two files to my boot floppy and it started right up. THANK YOU!!!! You saved my picture files!

i used the rceovery CD and did write new boot sector once (fixboot is the command i belive) but other times after getting the BSOD (yes, in XP) for different reasons, this didnt work. i think it depends on what you did as to how you fix it. or, in my case, if it can be fixed.

i learned most of the stuff i know from trial and error. school wouldve been cheaper.

sookylala 03-06-2005 03:26 AM

Hi,

I've tried the steps recommended by Anders but it still didn't work.
Stress levels are rising here.

Any other way I can get the comp to start up?

Thanks

vee_ess 03-07-2005 02:36 PM

Please, give a few details about what the computer is doing, what happened at the time that the issue started (possible causes), and general system specs related to OS layout (ie. Windows XP on the only partition on the only drive).

ksb 01-30-2006 02:05 PM

sorry to bring back such a dead thread but it was one of the top results on google and I really need help with this issue.

I think last night a virus got into my computer so when I started it today I got NTLDR is Missing. It wont go any farther into the system. I went into the bios and switched my hd to a smaller drive thats just in there (not even used). I figured I could just retrieve my files that way but it says access denied when I try to view my files. Im using windows xp, and im a complete noob about computer functions. I have 30 gigs of unreplaceable data that I need to get back; any help would be greatly appreciated.

~Ksb

vee_ess 01-30-2006 11:38 PM

Why don't you try to retrieve the files from a separate CD?

ksb 01-31-2006 12:49 PM

nevermind I figured it out. Then it went to something sayng it was compressed an di figured tht out too. Thanx for the suggestion though.

NTLDR is missing and no CD drive!

HI, ive read all these posts but i have the added problem that my laptop is a couple of years old and unfortunately the cd drive no longer works. Is there anyway to fix this without the use of a cd, for example using a floppy drive?
Thanks

t.torda 09-13-2006 07:02 PM

This is the topic with greatest no. of readers, over the years! I have another easy to cure reason for the "missing NTDLR.." message. In multi-HDD computers, Award BIOS has an ordered list of the HDD's. XP-Pro only looks at the first and reports "Missing..." if it does not find it there. Check the Boot section of your BIOS and after "Boot order" there are headings for removable drives and HDD. Check the order of the HDD's there and bring the one with the boot sector to the top if it is not there already.
I have seen this twice, already, after new HDD's have been added to machines.

If you do have the CD for XP or 2000, just go to the recovery console and run "fixboot", and "fixmbr".

If you don't know the admin password, you can use the shareware version of saminside and slave the drive to another machine to obtain it. There's many other ways: http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_admini...r_password.htm

If you don't have the CD, format a disk using a Windows NT/2000/XP computer, copy NTLDR, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini off the drive onto the disk, then copy those files onto the broken machines drive.

If your having this problem multiple times, and your not overclocking, you may have a weak power supply, a bad stick of ram, a flaky board, or a drive about to die <- This last one is NORMALLY NOT caused by a virus!

If you are overclocking, maybe you should loosen your memory timings, lower your clock speed, up your voltages, increase your cooling, etc.

If it happens all the time: Get a different computer repairman.

You should run chkdsk afterwards.
