Fileplanet..

I hate waiting in lines....

I do it at the supermarket...at the bank...even at work..

Now Im sitting here doing it on the net...*sigh*

Been waiting 'bout half an hour for this download to start..(200+ ppl in the line)

Nearly there...ad once it starts I can go back to sleep  :D

Re: Fileplanet..

yeah. I'm on the other side of that. I'm doing cgi for a website on planettribes. Any files for our members to upload, have to be ftp'd (via PHP's ftp functions) to the planettribes server (the site is on a specific gamespy cgi server). This dosnet always work out :( . In addition I have to stand in line also. But I can tell you, ever since gamespy has been offereing private servers for $$$, public server bandwidth has gone up quite a bit.

Re: Fileplanet..

So people actually subscribe to a personal server?

Wow..I thought that they would be a flop

wizbones 01-14-2002 11:59 AM

Re: Fileplanet..

Simo,

People will subscribe to anything if you convince them they need it bad enough. Or you have something everyone want's or at least thinks you have what they want. Sell sell sell.

Lines do suck, and if you're in London well queue's suck too  ;D

Keefe 01-14-2002 05:20 PM

Re: Fileplanet..

Do not say the word queue in my presence.  It makes me think of call queues.....errrrrrrrrr

Re: Fileplanet..

It makes me think of Morpheus or other music alternatives with the "Queded" progress.

Johnny_sarrs 09-14-2003 02:30 PM

FINALLY! some more ppls who HATE fileplanet, ive been looking on emule and trawling the net for a username + Password for fileplanet!
all i wanna download is the Bender soundpack for UT2003. its only a meg and i dont see why i should have to wait 6 G** **** ****** ***** **** HOURS!!!! for a 1 MEG download!!! they should make an "express lane" or summat like it for the small file users. i lost my 1meg line when i moved to this S***hole. and now all i can get is 32k dial up so its not as if i can connect to the queue, and leave it for a that long coz it would cost about £36.00 for a 1 MEG download?!?!?!?
anyways. thats my rant for today.

PS: Uranium-235
Ur avitar R0x0rz!

Jason425 09-14-2003 05:16 PM

one time a friend of a friend bought a fileplanet account and we all shared it.. it was nice..

gnogtr 09-23-2003 01:48 PM

I subscribe to Fileplanet, and a couple of my friends and I share it. It's great and fast when you don't have to wait in lines. Using wireless dsl, I easily get 160 Kbps for my download time. It's only $6/month to subscribe. Go in with somebody and split it.

Jason425 09-23-2003 09:17 PM

yea except when you have crap 50kbps dsl and everything is the same speed..

gnogtr 09-24-2003 08:40 PM

DSL is 100MBps. I have it. 56k sucks ass. I used to be on it. I almost killed myself. (literally)

vee_ess 09-24-2003 10:11 PM

No... There is no 100MBps DSL. I am assuming that you are reading your Local Area Connection stats and seeing the 100MBps. What that is, is your network card is connected to your router/DSL modem via a 100 BaseTX ethernet connection.

gnogtr 09-25-2003 12:19 PM

That's what I was saying. I connect at 100Mbps. Actually my computer is Linksys wireless, so I connect at 11Mbps. My roomate's computer is on at 100Mbps.

eviltechie 09-26-2003 02:12 AM

i hate waiting in a queue...

on irc, kazaa, or even gamespy...

but i dont mind gamespy keep going with their subscription service scheme because bandwidth is really expensive and they need that to afford the super high traffic they have

seriously, a company with bandwidth that big... its wonderous why they didnt think of charging sooner...

Jason425 09-26-2003 07:32 PM

no.. i'm not on 56k.. and no, you dont have 100mb dsl.. the lan is 100mb.. dsl is "512kbps" or basically 50k like i said..

gnogtr 09-26-2003 08:29 PM

The MB doesn't mean "mega byte" it means "mega bit." There's a difference. A 56K connection means 56 kbps. It only downloads at 4kbps. I don't know how fast dsl is, all I know is that I download at 150 Kbps.

Uranium-235 09-26-2003 09:21 PM

actually, MB is Mega Byte, and Mb means mega bit

56k is mainly referring to the upload speed, which is much greater then the download speed.

Jason425 09-26-2003 09:35 PM

well i DL at 50 give or take a few K.. whoever made it mb and mb.. and kbps and kbps.. need to get canned...

Uranium-235 09-27-2003 12:01 AM

I think charter accidently uncapped our speed, i've been getting this for the past few days...

and on an accurate speed test (RIT NDT) I get 1.9mbps

eviltechie 09-27-2003 12:43 AM

thats not bad

the fastest ive got on my cable is about 400 KB/s

gnogtr 09-27-2003 12:47 AM

Nice. Cable is much faster then DSL. Now, Gigabit....Mmmmmm...Optical.....

Jason425 09-27-2003 10:01 AM

yep cable owns dsl only cuz the dsl companies are cheapo.. i have gigabit lan on my mobo.. but makes no diff other than the name for now.. in fact its a hassle because XP doesn't have the drivers

vee_ess 09-28-2003 01:40 PM

Jason425 is right, DSL is far more potent, its potential just isn't taken advantage of. With regard to 56k, the upload speed is 33.6k on V.90 and 48.0k on V.92. The download is rarely ever 53.3k, the max speed for 56k according to FCC specs, but is slower for other reasons. The TCP that we use today reduces the speed of transmission of a packet to 50% of the previous attempt if the previous attempt failed. That, along with congestion, gives us speeds lower than the real life speeds we are connected/rated at.

gnogtr 09-28-2003 05:08 PM

Yeah. Bellsouth will never use dsl to its full potential. They (the phone company) are a monopoly and have no competition in the dsl market, so they don't have to speed it up....

Jason425 09-28-2003 07:20 PM

i'm on crap local phone company dsl and i have no other choice, no cable and no other dsl gets here

gnogtr 09-28-2003 10:03 PM

Same here. There is another company, I51 that does dsl, but it's easier to have it all on the same bill.

Now..... I have a question! :shake:

Where can I get a GameSpy ID to download Counter-Strike Full Version from FilePlanet.com???

That’s all folks….. I really appreciate your help :)

Jason425 10-03-2003 06:47 PM

you have that comp.. go buy cs..

Mr. Sharpy 10-10-2003 11:03 AM

Look, if you people want to pay money to a company that has been greedy as your average oil company since they started making money with gamespy, that's your perogative. But what about the fact that these people _force_ everyone they host to put files exclusively on their sites; or the fact that they actively give services AT A LOSS to game develeopers to trade for exclusive downloads...

What we have here is a trend that will sooner, rather than later, force people to pay money to download FREE files. Period. Unless people make a stand and say "I refuse", that's our future. And you won't be able to blame me. I had a mod on planetunreal. Just to piss them off we put exlusives on unreality.dk. I have refused to use gamespy or fileplanet since fp required signin. I guess i'll sink with my ideals, but i'll have a clean conscience.

gnogtr 10-10-2003 01:45 PM

You're paying for bandwidth. I paid $5 for a lifetime subscription to gamespy, so I'll never have to pay again, but that was the deal then, now you have to pay a monthly fee, but I don't. As for Fileplanet, I only pay $6 per month. That's not a lot for the bandwidth that I use up.

Prometheus 10-10-2003 02:00 PM

which isp serves 1gbit/sec?
