LaptoP OverHeat?

WEll, a lot of temperature programs wouldnt work so i have to rely on HDD which only does my hard drive to make it work. o hwell. anyway, the temperature normally gets up to 130 degrees FARENHEIT by a few hours. my uncle told me that i shuldnt leave my laptop on all the time (i used to 24/7 have it on).

ummm....so basically its a dell inspiron 8200 with a p4 1.6 ghz 384 ram 40 gig hard drive running windoze XPee

i want to know whether its gonna hurt my laptop if i DO leave it on all the time, becuase it would be very helpful to me if i could but i dont want to endanger it

thanks

It'll last significantly longer. Every ten degrees higher your processor runs (on average), its life is cut in half. Also, 130*F is rather high Make sure it is getting adequate air flow.

damn.
thanks!
hehe

well, its a laptop, so i dont have many options for heat flow. this is what i do most of the time. i raise it up on a 2 inch foam on each corner. on weekends when its on ~14 hours i run my usb fan underneath it, but that didnt seem to affect the temperature any!

any ideas? and a temp monitor that doesnt suck?

Leaving your computer on 24/7 sounds useless and like a waste of electricity at the least. There are only benefits to giving your computer a break (not to mention time to cool down) shut down when not in use for extended periods and put in suspend/sleep when idle for short time.

theflinger 04-14-2003 05:46 PM

yes i guess so, but for my filesharing its really useful-- tonite i downloaded 2 giga bytes of data!

i really only need to do it every once in a while!

i figured out that if i run my fan (which i burned out btw!) it gets down to 113 degrees. if i shut off my cancer research proggy (maxes outu the cpu) i imagine i could get even more out of it.

anyway, thanks for the help guys.

i hope running it 5 hours a day and 12 on weekends wont hurt it!

btw standby is not an option- disconnects my internet!

Jason425 04-14-2003 11:51 PM

i know standby cuts your connection off, i didn't know you spend all day breaking copyright laws.. :firedevil: yea.. cancer research prog + you wanting to give ur cpu a break dont mix :shake:

I have Sony Vaio lappy, monitoring controlled for heat CPU inspection, when the CPU goes up and the fan speed increased to keep the CPU cool down and back to normal CPU and fan speed down to normal.

2 Vents on side/back and I can see the fins (heatstink and fan) thru the vents.

Laptop overheat

HEY GUYS!

i currently own a samsung v20 laptop and just recently it got infected with the global SASSAR VIRUS :o . The virus was using up all my ram and the ram was having to work overtime to keep up to the virus' demands. I managed to get rid of the virus but as a result of this my 256mb ram got permanently burned out  :( . The effects of this are that the computer is very slow at bringing up web pages and it is a read pain in the neck. Should i replace the ram or will my current burned out ram eventually go back to normal and be fast again

Please post here and advise me on what to do  .

Cheers AB 8)

Jason425 05-05-2004 08:39 PM

hmm.. how do you know that the ram is 'burnt out'? The virus just might have hid that part of your ram... You can certainly try buying new ram though...

gnogtr 05-06-2004 12:21 AM

Heck, if you want to know about overheating, you ought to purchase an older Alienware laptop with the 533Mhz bus. Mine overheats all the time....Shitty cooling solution on it, they put the cpu fans on the bottom of the lt....

Jason425 05-06-2004 12:35 AM

good thinken.. pick up all the crap on the table too... :/ ...

AB 05-06-2004 01:02 PM

Jason, i know my ram has burned out because i checked it, the pins are burned. Buying a new ram could prove expensive. did u get the sasser worm?

Jason425 05-06-2004 05:37 PM

No I didn't get the worm.. ram is one of the cheapest components of computers now days

eviltechie 05-07-2004 02:06 AM

no...
laptop ram isnt cheap...

gnogtr 05-07-2004 07:15 AM

Nope, it isn't. Now my damn laptop won't even turn on! I don't know what's wrong....I have a final in 45 minutes and no laptop!!!! This is crazy (at least it's under warrenty...)

AB 05-07-2004 10:53 AM

That is very true evilteckie laptop ram is expensive :(

Jason425 05-07-2004 04:43 PM

nothing in laptops are cheap.. get over it..

AB 05-08-2004 01:32 PM

laptops

indeed, nofin is cheap but y did u say ram was cheap in the first place, u obviously dont no wat ur talkin bout k

Jason425 05-08-2004 03:50 PM

well it's one of the only parts of a laptop you can replace... lot cheaper than buying a whole new one

AB 05-08-2004 03:58 PM

for once i agree with you

gnogtr 05-09-2004 02:34 PM

Yeah, I'm stuck with 512 DDR266 in my laptop and it slows it down BIG TIME. I wish I had a GB of DDR 400, but that would cost an arm and a leg!
