ATI DRIVER PROBLEM

For one reason or another I had to reformat my computer... this led to re-intalling winXP... that's all well and good, then it tells me there is a problem with my ATI driver and I should re-install my display adapter; I find my disks and give it a shot... it's now telling me I should set up my display adapter with a "Standard VGA Driver" and then re-run the setup for my ATI Adapter...
So basically I need to find a "Standard VGA Driver." Anyone know where I can find one of these???

It's the default Windows driver.

Yeah I came across that in another forum... but I need to know how I can use the standard VGA driver, to get my computer to a point where I can Install the ATI Redeon 9000 Pro Driver.

ati problems

Like yourself, i have an ATI card, although yours is a bit newer.
One thing about ATI is that their drivers are updated almost tri-annually.
So you should visit the ATI site and check for updated drivers (and the new cards.... that probably will blow your 'older' card by then..)... (-:
anyway- try installing the drivers. if you have a scaled down version of a "full" card, ie "LE" model, then try the full model card's drivers!!!! Sometimes it works! Good luck. Windows drivers (on the windows installation cd are seriously outdated.

just install with "windows standard vga drivers" and then go from there. OR try installling an earlier ATI's drivers. and then go from there. On installation, all that matters is that text is readable for you to visit the ATI site to choose the correct rivers. Good luck.

ati, drivers.. lol

ati have the worst reputation for drivers

anyway, just download the latest driver from the ati website, and go through the installation program, and pray!

Jason425 07-02-2003 11:45 AM

i can't stand ati drivers either, (everytime u get new drivers u gotta redo every video setting, etc) give me a link to that rant if you still have it, i'd like to read it.

Just because Linux isn't supported don't mean the windows drivers are bad.

ATI did have a problem with drivers in the past but as I stated b4, they don't any more. They have one of the best driver support programs there is. They even rival nvidia now.

i wasn't referring to the linux situation, read the general comments

I would advise against installing the default drivers. Find the drivers for your video card and download them. Right-click "My Computer", click "Properties", go to the "Hardware" tab, and click the "Device Manager" button. Open the "Display Adapters" directory, and uninstall anything there. Then, if the drivers you downloaded self-install through means of a program, run it. Otherwise, go to the "Action" menu, then click "Scan for hardware changes". Windows should come up with a list of devices that haven't been installed. Click the one referring to your video card. (At this point I am not 100% sure about the specifics of the names and the order so I'll be vague, but it should not matter) Click "Install the hardware manually", then click the button that shows "Have Disk". Locate the drivers you downloaded and install. Whether you installed the drivers manually or by an included program, you will need to restart your computer, and you should be fine after that.

The entire thread on Slashdot was about Linux and TV-Video card drivers.

I have the same prob

Hi, I seem to have a similar problem.

Essentialy i have one ATI driver, which is giving me problems.
I would like to upgrade to thier newest one, in the hope that it will fix things.

HOWEVER

When i go to install the new one, it says:
Try to set up your system with with a standard vga driver, before running setup. Ok... stange... but i'll do it.
As soon as i find out how. When i go to choose my driver from a list, it only lists ATI drivers. Even when i uncheck "show only compatible drivers"

How can i find the standard vga driver for winxp?
