Is it possible to...

Is it possible to hack into someone's computer through a multiplayer online computer game such as Diablo II, or Starcraft, or Warcraft III? Because my mom won't let me play ANY of those games online because she says that when you're playing with them, you're sharing information and they can hack your computer using the game to get information to hack you. Is it possible? And if it is, is their any way for me to prevent it?

their are exploits in games. Hell there's exploits in any online application, if you look hard enough. Most of the time, it's the servers who get hacked, not the people playing. It's highly unlikely. More likely to get hacked from a windows exploit then a game. Those games are patched quite a bit anyways.

Your mother tells the truth in that it's possible, yet highly, highly unlikely

Ok. Thanx. But is they're any way for me to prevent that "highly-unlikely-to-happen-situation" from happening? I know i cant get one of those firewalls, cuz they block me from playing the game with other people Period. But is there one out there that lets me play with them and block them from hacking? Cuz i dont know if i can live without playing those games!!! lol, i can live...but id really like to find a way to convince my mom to let me play cuz they are good games. Also, even though its so like unlikely to happen (i told her that already), she STILL wont let me play. :/ :shake:

And sorry about the "guest" thing. I keep forgettin to log in...

You should think about asking on a diablo and *craft forum. See if anybody has ever actually had it happen

Prometheus 08-21-2003 02:42 AM

have ur mom contact the makers of the games

while shes doing that tell her that wait.......guys are getting ur info right now

someone putting stuff on ur comp and getting info is inevitable but u can slow it down or prevent it

adaware spybot

ur mom is just paranoid no offense

Prometheus 08-21-2003 02:45 AM

also btw

hackers generally dont target gamers they know its a buch of guys with only a little money or just kids

or they might just be Fing around for fun but there is almost NO DANGER of being hacked

Uranium-235 08-21-2003 04:45 PM

I think your mom isn't paranoid. She's probably trying to make an excuse to get you off those games and doing your homework :)

those games are highly addictive. That's probably why I try to stay as far away from them as I can

Ganondorf729 08-21-2003 08:21 PM

lol, thanx every1, now that i have this info, maybe now i can convince her to let me play them again... Thanx again :wavey:

TheRogue 08-22-2003 03:48 AM

if the homework excuse is true, tell yourmom (hehe), i've played games constantly for the last 2 years +, and i came out with top marks in my last year of school exams (UK), gaming is more important than homework!

Uranium-235 08-22-2003 12:25 PM

well, nobody is the same. Some people need to study and crap like that (yeah like me)

Prometheus 08-22-2003 05:20 PM

Put on ZoneAlarm and allow the games to access the internet just don't give it server access. Then anyone who hacks to get into your computer will then have to get past ZoneAlarm. Hackers with those skills will be trying to make themselves billionaires not trying to find out your middle name.

Life is about taking chances buddy. If your going to worry about a little thing like that which will NEVER happen, you shouldn't have even bought a computer. Even when I am doing shit where I am actually vulnerable to getting hacked unlike playing a game, it is still the last thing on my mind.

Hacking Servers or Game Clients

So what if i set up a server on lets say Jedi Knights 2. Is there more possibility of me gettin hacked because I am a server or not? I've got the same problem as guest except i just can't set up servers.

Jason425 11-09-2003 10:43 PM

yes, it's one more port open. Paranoia is only so effective, eventually it becomes harmful, as we see here. Just run a firewall and etc.
