Maybe if we email him or something requesting any pictures he might have. Just so we could see it...Who gonna ask? I could and cuz I have a good email address for it.

yeah sounds like a good idea vee_ess...but only do it if you want because by the look of the number of responses that he has had on this thread that he started...it doesnt look like he'll get back to you...or this thread...anytime  soon, but its always worth a try!  ;)

Wow

Think I will wait for a manufacturer to produce one with a window :) that is an install for a clean room, not my bench or garage! Until then I am happy with my retro polished / semi chrome drive :P

Smoked1 08-17-2002 08:36 PM

That's a pretty cool thing to have sitting on the shelf but for the most part i will be keeping my drives in tact for now. I could go for a clean room. It sure would be cool to have the cash to build one.

Jazzman 08-17-2002 10:57 PM

Here is a pic of one i did ~ 3 months ago. it is a maxtor 8gigger, nothing special (i didn't care if I ruined it, i just wanted it to look cool) I had some extra plexi, etc. the cool part is, I expected it to not work ever again, and it works FINE!!!

All i did to ensure no dust was get a plastic grocery bag i dunked it in water a few times and hung it upside down to try to cleanse it some, then I opened the HDD upside down, put it immediately inside the bag (to try and prevent dust) I messed with the cover then (used hot glue to ensure airtight-ness on the window) , and then put it back on upside down.

The really crazy thing is it survived the whole ordeal I was even able to get the files off in windows from it, I did a surface scan and lo-and-behold, it survived even THAT!!! amazing, at the least.

Very cool at the best :)

Oh sorry for the crappy quality of pictures, my camera is a peice.

[edit] Oh i neglected to mention- the power leads go to a 5mm BL00 LED i installed to a 4pin molex :D [/edit]

Smoked1 08-18-2002 03:10 AM

Very nice. I wouldn't store any important data on it though

Jazzman 08-18-2002 06:28 AM

me neither. i'm not counting on it to KEEP working really, i won't bet on it, thats for sure :-D but it was just amazing to me that joe schmoe (me) with a plastic bag and a little bit of time was able to crack a hdd open and put it back together and it still worked ! I always thought those things were incredibly sensetive but they supposedly are okay with forces like 80g's? amazing stuff, technology is.

Smoked1 08-18-2002 12:40 PM

The only thing that scres me is that the reliability of the drive is toast. A piece of dust could just stay in there for a year without causing problems and then poof, your screwed

Jazzman 08-18-2002 03:47 PM

agreed.

but it still LOOKS sweet
:)

Smoked1 08-18-2002 03:54 PM

Very agreed. I would like to have one even if it was not functional. Hard drive manufactureres will start making them that way as more people talk about it. Happens all of the time. You will notice that as modders do things more and more they start showing up on major products. Blue LEDs for example.

accurateimage 08-18-2002 04:28 PM

Hmmm

Thinking about pulling apart an old caviar gb drive hat has been sitting for a few years and try it and see if it still works after, I could care less if it breaks, so we will just have to see :)

Smoked1 08-18-2002 04:50 PM

go for it dude!

accurateimage 08-18-2002 06:27 PM

:)

Will keep ya posted, hey also a thought, what about taking it apart in a autoshops paint room..?? Hehehe, there is barily a snitch of dust and the closest thing to a clean room I can think of that is widely avalable, I am sure they would not care if ya use it, or drop them a $20 spot fo rthe useage :)

Smoked1 08-18-2002 07:06 PM

If it's for school they should be happy to see that someone is interested in technology and give you a pat on the back.

Jazzman 08-18-2002 10:53 PM

smoked1- i have to agree with your outlook on mods coming more into mainstream consumer-pc's. My dad who is an average joe who knows basically nothing about pc's.

and HIS main buying point for buying a sony vaio over any other system was the blue led on the front.

*smacks head* i can't beleive I am his offspring.

Smoked1 08-18-2002 11:35 PM

LOL. Maybe modders should be compensated in some way. I mean, in a way we are setting new standards for computers in general.

accurateimage 08-19-2002 03:22 AM

I wish man but it will never happen *LOL* just come up with an original idea and slap a patent on it or at least register the idea, so when the big guys come out with the idea sue there pants off and make them pay ya! hehe :)

Smoked1 08-19-2002 09:05 AM

It's worth looking in to

Slammer 10-01-2002 09:24 AM

I'm in the process of windowing a hd, but when i was making the window it got scrached. it took about four hours to make so I have to figure out how to get the scratches out.

As for it being dangerous to the HD, my dad just happens to be a chemist and has access to a clean room, so I'll just have him swap covers for me.

the HD is an old WD caviar, Its pretty common and i had a dead one laying around. So i took the cover off the old one, cut a hole in it and made a window out of plexi to fit. i'm waiting for some blue led's to finish it.

accurateimage 10-01-2002 01:42 PM

How bad is the scratch..?? if it is tiny and thin take a butane torch very quickly over the scratched area, back and forth until it dissapears, I have polished quite a few peices of plexi in my day :D If it is very deep or very bumpy take around a 2000 grit to the intire surface and make it look foggy and make sure you go deep enough get ride of the scratches and again take a butane torch back and forth accross it and watch the scratches dissapear before your eyes :)

 Yup! the guy did a nice job that convinced me that I can do it too... Problem is I can't afford to waste my 15 GB Quantum HD if I fail. I should find a 1 or 4 GB HD and get nasty >:) .
