Gay Marriage
O,k its the biggest thing in the news.
Our president wants to ban it.... Where do we all stand with it? Just curious... |
I agree with the president.
|
I am strongly opposed to any law that will ban same-sex marriages. It is outlined in our constitution that we all have equal rights. Banning gay marriages will be a blatent violation of our most fundamental rights.
|
People are homophobics scared of what seems....wrong.... guys LIKE lesbians but not gays but marriage for them seems wrong to them.
|
i support gay marriage...
as long as both chicks are hot lol j/k this is such a sensative issue, i dont know where to stand... i think marriage should be allowed since by banning them from marrying wont change them back to opposite sex attraction |
I just think that it is just plain immoral to marry from the same sex. Its adam and eve, not adam and steve.
|
I'm against gay marriage, and yes I am a homophobe of sorts. To me it just doesn't seem right. Yes I've know gay people, and had a cousin that was gay (died of AIDS not to long after I meet him). Still don't like it, don't thing it's right. MHO

w00t grinnin is back!
|
Yhea, I might be around a little more now. Now ya'll behave ya hear.
|
Yeah, the Bible says that it is wrong, therefore, it is wrong. I'm not a homophobe because I know plenty of gay ppl, but I don't support it at all.
|
the bible was written to tell people how to live their lives it was written to give explanation for miracles of science (thus the illuminati)
anyway It tell us what we want to hear if it seems unholy...then its okay... to hate them |
The bible doesn't tell us to hate gays, it just tells us that it's wrong. It's up to God to judge not us.
|
oh god don't start the bible in here.. i'll prob get banned lol.. I'm with keefe.. very much so for gay rights.. and marriage.. Gay isn't a choice.. it's like skin color. People don't (and why would they) wake up one day and say "ok, I think i'll be gay now!" :/
|
Hmm, I'm going to chime in on this once and then leave it at that. It is _obvious_ that gay marriage should not be banned. Gays should be given equal rights as normal citizens, because they are.
There's not even significant academic debate on the subject. Academics just don't see the point in debating it. And if an academic doesn't see the point in debating something, you know it's got to be pretty solid. It's all a bunch of political rhetoric to play off of people's fears and naive/ignorant beliefs founded upon the pathetic attempts at science of 5000 year old agrarian societies. As outlined in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, there is a fundamental right to marry. It is not defined between a man and a woman. Therefore, it is against international law and human rights norms to ban gay marriage. In the legal history of the United States, it is only in the past few years that people thought that gay marriage was something wrong. Which is why this is such a big issue. The laws are having to be changed to ban it. Regardless of what you may _think_ about the exclusivity of marriage to heterosexuals, our legal history is clear, marriage has been defined between two people with _NO_ reference to sex. Addressing the gayness is wrong, unnatural, and other such statements. Studies going back many, many years have repeatedly shown that homosexual behavior occurs at a fairly constant rate throughout history and across cultures. It's hard to believe that this is a coincidence and has convinced everyone who looks at the evidence with an open mind that being gay is not necessarily a choice. Some people hit puberty and are attracted to the opposite sex, and some to the same sex. Why this occurs is much less clear, but it is obvious that it is not unnatural. As for biblical references as to why it's wrong. I might remind you that the bible is fiction. While you may hold yourself to some inconsistent philosophy that can be drawn from the stories in it (though that's not to say the stories may not be based on fact, but certainly all of them are not), you do not have the right to hold others to that philosophy. In fact, you have a civil obligation _NOT_ to hold others to that philosphy. It's called the modern secular state. Early Modern Europe discovered for the rest of the world how badly religious states can mess with people's lives through terribly oppressive rule and deadly war. If you don't like fundamentalism in the Arab world, don't bring it here, please. Again, the adam and eve analogy, please, be serious, _obviously_ that's empty rhetoric. one word: Evolution. I'm sure someone will try to come back and say, oh, but a man and a woman have a special bond b/c they can procreate. big deal. if marriage was all about procreating, the host of rights associated with it wouldn't be granted and there would be laws about requiring married couples to have children. Procreation and marriage are, in the end, unrelated. So, allowing the LGBT community to marry on the same basis as hetero sexuals a) not only does not diminish the institution of marriage, but fortifies it and makes it stronger by allowing it to be opened to all who want to marry. worried about things that weaken marriage, go after the 50% of adults in this country who have been divorced. b) there are fundamental obligations vis-a-vis human rights to allow LGBT persons to marry. even if everyone in the society but those two people didn't want them to marry, the existence of this fundamental right protects their ability to bond, not only emotionally, but legally. i could go on, but i think that's enough. edit: furthermore, from the point of view of bush's recent announcement, this would the the _first_ amendment to the constitution that would serve to diminish the rights of American citizens. Considering his already pitiful record on human/civil/constitutional rights, do you really want a leader like this making a decision of that great of significance for you? Do you even want an amendment to the Constitution that is designed to DECREASE rights. Whatever happened to the land of the free?!?!?!!/ |
i dont suport it, to me it seems against my religion..
but i dunoo much about it |
well said james..
and joja.. yea.. religion.. there ya go.. bunch of junk that clouds people's judgement.. same reason there is even a debate on abortion.. if you eat anything you kill stuff.. give it a break.. besides, abortion is kind of population control |
yeah i shouldnt of brought it up :/
|
if you're really interested in this kind of debate, please check out http://www.volconvo.com its a pretty cool site.
you'll probably find me in religion and philosophy quite often. i understand your point keefe and jason. but getting the 'right' to marry another gay person really degrades the family system. even if the right were to exist (which i somewhat support) it would eventually be detrimental to the family. also i'd like to know which exact rights you feel a gay person needs to have, that any other person has. marriage is the obvious answer, what else though? as for the population control statement reguarding abortion. with that logic why don't you think gay marriages promote population control? and why don't you then also support gay marriages? |
i think that US and Canada should worry about drug smugglers and criminals more than these gay marriage issues...
get more laws up against the criminals instead of harming the innocent people |

-The Management Mojo, your 'Adam and Steve' borders on this rule. but I'll allow it |
lol @ the management..
merc.. i do support gay marriage.. guess i didn't make that clear |
Now you're banging on religion?!? Oh come on, it doesn't cloud ppl's minds. If I weren't Christian I probably wouldn't have such good judgement. You saw what happened to Soddam and Gomarah. Let's not let that happen again, they already say that part of California is going to break off and fall into the ocean. This is pushing that.
|
nooo that's been happening for a looong time. It would eventually happen no matter how what the laws are

Let's not roll this topic into one that attacks religion, okay? Everyone has a right to say what they want and feel anyway they want, it's America. But to say all religion is fiction and clouds people's minds, that's pushing the envelope. There is a specific topic we are talking about. Just to attack a religion because someone has one isn't what this thread is about and should be discussed elsewhere. My $.02

This country was founded by mostly christianity. And they decided to seperate it from state. But how often does that happen? Some of our laws are founded on religion (a few of the commandments [murder, stealing, adultry mainly]). These laws were in place cause these things hurt people. Is gay marriage really hurting anyone? No, it just seems wrong to some people, but it's not really hurting anyone.
|
That is what I feel too, It doesn't hurt me or affect my life... but when the issue comes up, I just say that it doesn't make sense and I don't support it. I guess you can say I'm neutral.
|
"Some of our laws are founded on religion (a few of the commandments [murder, stealing, adultry mainly]). These laws were in place cause these things hurt people. "
nevermind religion those things are common sense. murder stealing and adultry will cause uprise in a government no matter what. gay marriage now thats not common sense. why do gays relationships need to be legally embraced? "Is gay marriage really hurting anyone? No, it just seems wrong to some people, but it's not really hurting anyone." its not hurting anyone? yeah right if it wasn't hurting anyone gay people wouldn't have an issue would they? how is it hurting gay people by them not being married in our legal system? |
merc.. then why does anyone need to be 'legally embraced' if gays don't?
gay marriage isn't hurting anyone because it isn't happening yet other than SF.. There are lots of advantages to marriage, taxes and otherwise.. what's the big deal either way. juet let em do it especially since it doesn't hurt anyone. |
"which taxes? and otherwise what? whats the big deal? it doesn't hurt anyone?"
these aren't excuses. if i'm going to vote i want to know why the hell i should allow gays to be married. please tell me which taxes exactly and what real differences it means. i would definately not vote for something just because it doesn't hurt me. if thats your idea of voting i'm ashamed. i have nothing against gay people but whats the advantage in legalizing gay marriage? |
taxes are one thing
inssurance discounts if you are a couple i think but just the symbology |
wtf is symbology
|
|
couldn't take the 5 seconds to define it for him? :whack:
i'm not a lawyer but there are legal benefits for marriage.. like being able to see them in the hospitle.. and besides, it doesn't affect you any. "gays will be gays" :/ |
well if it doesn't affect me any i'm fucking not voting for it. now will someone get me the facts, i'm debating weather i want this or not and i need info.
p.s. symbology is a lame word |
k i quit this thread.. merc is on a stat trip and doesn't care about others' rights :/...
|
suppose ur 42 and a tech levy for a school came around...(which happened here)
it doesnt affect you but you voted anyway |
first prometheus, that would affect me, i care about my city and education.
i'm not on a stat trip and i'll care about someones rights when you tell me what it does to benefit gay people (by this i mean the laws not what it makes people feel). briefly mentioning taxes isn't enough. i'm trying to go about this logically and you're getting all defensive like i'm being a stat whore? i don't give a shit about stats. look at my post count compaired to yours. i have arguments and you ignore them because you can't answer. |
