Watercooling

havent i done this one already?

anyway - anybody know of a watercooling kit i can put pure h20 in and not worry aboput it being contaminated?

gnogtr has a pretty good one made by Swiftech. I've read some reviews and its not bad.

Jason425 04-02-2004 06:07 PM

swiftech is super leet.. or you can get a TT setup and have it spill all over the place.. :/

gnogtr 04-07-2004 11:39 PM

Yeah, I used to have the TT setup, go with Swiftech, it's awsome. If you have a little extra pocket change, you may want to jump to the Pelitzer cooling. (I think that's how it's spelled) It's basically active cooling instead of passive. While it has the standard waterblock, it also discharges heat electronicly (some nasa thing...). It looks really cool, but you've got to have a lot of space for it, including an extra PCI slot.

Jason425 04-08-2004 12:29 AM

i think it's spelt peltier. I have also heard concerns about condensation, but I bet that's fixed with today's models.. I don't see the benefit of having the chip at temps below freezing.. i'd think just cool would be better for it than freezing..
not to mention that they are power pigs..

do yourself a favor and don't use water. Get a liquid with a good heat capacity, that's not too viscous (you don't want molasses in there), and most importantly doesn't conduct electricity. you can probably dig something out of a chem book if you look (or ask a prof/teacher). Or for the lazyman, i believe there are products you can buy made specifically for liquid cooling

gnogtr 04-11-2004 02:39 PM

Vegitable oil, it's non conductive. Yeah, it's peltier, I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote that. Also, it still gets bad condensation, which is why I still use water. If it doesn't leak, water is the best colant avaliable.

Dragon 04-22-2004 07:07 PM

it is peltier, and the trouble with it is - tons of condensation due to the way it transfer heat from one sife of the plate to the other - one side is about 70 -90 while the other is around 20 - 40, so you pretty much need water to cool it anyway.

as for the chem, pure H2O doesnt conduct elecricity at all, but where to get it.... and on top of that, anything in the tubing will ad to the water making it conduct. what a pain! actually i was looking at swiftech anybody have one with NB, CPU, VGA and dual resevoirs? if so whatd it cost? like 350?

gnogtr 04-22-2004 08:46 PM

Mine has dual fans, and it cools my processor and video card. It cost $325. I'm going to put a different resevoir in it, but the company hasn't shipped it out yet...It cools very efficiently. With my processor and video card overclocked, I can compress videos with Dr. Divx all night and keep my temps under 50C.

Dragon 04-23-2004 09:33 AM

sounds like the way to go then... but can somebody explain the use of a NB block to me before i decide to buy one?

eviltechie 05-07-2004 02:30 AM

did you know that pure water is something made synthetically in labs and cost a fortune???

Dragon 05-07-2004 07:10 AM

no i was not aware it was made synthetically, but i had a feeling it was expensive.

as were on the topic, is there a way to remove the electrolytes from it in a home type setting?

Jason425 05-07-2004 04:42 PM

umm.. anyone heard of distilled?

gnogtr 05-07-2004 06:05 PM

Yeah, we made some distilled water in Chemesty when I was a Freshman (man that was a long time ago....).

Jason425 05-07-2004 08:33 PM

our chem is in junior year .. oh wait (remembers you're in college)

eviltechie 05-08-2004 10:35 PM

distilled water is what you want but it is still ionized so you would want some sort of anti corrosive aditive added
just a tiny little bit

Yeah, I never got to take it in High School because of a time conflict. I took so bs Physical Science class when I was a sophmore in HS, I got an A without ever cracking a book. I could go up to the teacher during a test and ask if I got the math right and she would show me where I screwed up or even tell me how to work the problem
