Hmmm....Slow video/processor (most of us hate Nvidia and don't care for P4)...Nice ram, just not enough of it...The case is ok, but it's a mid tower case, so you may have some heat problems down the road...I'm not very familure with the sound, we mostly deal with Soundblaster...Samsung makes a good monitor, but 17" is just a bit too small for my taste....
Overall, I say you've got a good overclockable system, the first step is to attack that. You're going to have a bit of a noisy fan setup because it is a mid tower case, and your video is becoming quite outdated, so you may want to think about upgrading to something newer as well as getting another stick of 512 ram, because some games are starting to need 1GB to even start to run smoothly. Overall I give it a 6.5/10, it has some real potential, and if you put the right amount of money in it, you should end up with a really cool system, also if you don't already have one, we highly recommend an Antec powersupply, cheap ones will die on you in a heart beat. |
to gnogtr
yea thanx a ton for the advice, i forgot to mention my PSU is 500watts so i think im set, its Powmax and i think that is a decent brand. its not Fortron but it gets the job done. Yea my geforce4 ti4200 is horrible, absolutely horrible. But hey as long as it plays CS at max settings i cant complain to much. But hey thanx a ton for the advice.
Be aware! I have had 3 PowMax PSUs die, and 1 burn a motherboard, they are horrible, you really need to spend some $$ on an Antec. Also, I'm selling a motherboard, CPU and Video card for $400, a Asus board with a XP 3000+ and a Radeon 9800 Pro video card. Let me know if your interested...I'm upgrading to a X800 XT PE video card next week when they come out...

VERY INTERESTED
Wow i would be super interested but the only problem is the lack of funds :( but hey keep that offer on the table. Yea i am going to go with the Hitech radeon 9800 pro http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...161-109&depa=0
because it is nice and keeps the gpu frozen solid (sort of) But yea, why arent u going with the Nvidia 6800 ultra GT, if u look at these benchmarks ull see that it gets better ratings then the X800's by far. Check this: http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/...i-x800-12.html but yea i mean it all depends on if your an nvdia guy or not, i mean ive heard that people with the 6800 ultras get 3dmark03 scores of over 12000 which is sick! and i dont even want to think of what the ATI's will get. But yea this is a good conversation. ;) ~Peace |
I despise Nvidia, and BTW, ATI blew them out of the water on that Tom's Hardware review. The new Nvidia may just sit side-by-side with the X800 XT, but I won't buy Nvidia ever again, they screwed me twice.
That rig looks nice. I bet it sounds like a wind-tunnel when its running.
gnogtr is too hard on you.. that comp owns.. the video is good enough and he has a better chip than me.. it's not slow.. 512 is good enough for everything except lineage and bf1942.... he's got zalman on the cpu so he prob won't be OC'ing much but it prob isn't too loud..
Oh come on J-425, I'm just trying to spice him up with what's current...
spice his wallet up .. because there won't be anything in it! I'm in just about the same boat as his.. and it's NOT a good time to upgrade IMO.. at least when you're in our situation.. waiting for pci-express is the best decision in my view
very true jason
this was my first system build, and yes it does sound like a wind tunnel, my Abit IS7 northbridge fan is strangely very loud upon startup.. any suggestions? But yea for the most part this computer will do for now, until i get my 9800 pro Hi tech style, this will do for now.
If your chipset fan is loud, then just get another one, say by Zalman, and replace it.
looks awesome, and i doubt is anywahere nea as loud as mine
2 vantec tornados |
ahh i c :wavey: www.IGN.com for new halo 2 screens
NaPsTeR, i want to know how you got your avatar so big. Did TWL make the size bigger?
I don't blame you, I just fell into some scholarship money that allowed me to get my current system. I'm still serious about that board/cpu and video card...
I kind of agree on the video.. but noway does that cpu suck at all....
I never said it sucked, I just said that it needs to be overclocked.
oh.. yea I agree on that, but he's got a zalman fan, so he prob can't go too far.. 3 ghz should be easy though
Yeah...I just ordered a X800 XT PE. CDW has them for $459, but they're not instock. They haven't been released yet, but they put them in their inventory, so I went ahead and got one because that's a damn good price....I should have one close to release (it's supposed to be tomorrow...)
nice.. hello 40k 2k1....
Hehe, yup, you know me, that's just the way I am...
nVidia is good card company, but replace that 4200 pronto, i'd say get the 6800 if you have the money, but a 5600ultra or even a 5950 ultra (they are cheaper now) would be good. You could also try ATI Radeon 9800 series too...
Proc is OK, I would overclock or replace with a 3.2gigger. The extreme series is a total waste don't buy it unless your wallet is the size of Bill Gates'. I would get a 3.2 gig 800 mhz bus (Northwood? not as familiar with P4's). Your system would kick bigger/better ass if you replace that video card pronto! The 4200 is dragging you down, and you wouldn't be able to play games like Far Cry, or even Half Life 2 down the road. Oh yeah try a PC Power and Cooling power supply. I suggest the Silencer 410, it has a 12v connector for the more advanced mobos, really good quality stuff there. About $85. |
Steer clear of Nvidia....you'll have to get a 480 watt psu to support it, plus 2 molex plugs and two slots.
I don't know about you but I don't have $150 for a psu (the pc power and cooling psu's cost something like that..)
Well, I have the PSU, but not many ppl do...
Bleh, don't listen to them. The 6800's are amazing cards; people need to start giving credit where credit is due whether or not they believe it is better or worse than the X800's (which should be getting credit from those who do give credit to the 6800's).
Well, we know what card vee is getting...
LOL
No, I doubt I will spend any money on my system unless I go with AMD 64 stuff. I'm pretty happy with my BFG 5600 Ultra (which, BTW, one me a dispute last night between me and a friend with a 9600XT :D). EDIT: I just realized, I never mentioned I finally replaced my S3 Trio 4MB card about 8 months ago. I really love this thing (the 5600) but haven't really gotten into gaming again yet to really see how it does. I usually have music videos play while I work on my system and when good ones come on, I often Full Screen it and I am really satisfied with the video performance and the resolution upscaling and other video improvement. |
It's funny to see you say how it owns with music video's.. but I guess when you have a 4mb card those things are a luxary...
So all this arguing for nothing?!? Come on man....Well, at least you got rid of that S3....
is 5600 better than a 9500 Pro?
just a note.. ive got a vantewc trueblue 480 and unless there is an option to switch the SATA plugs for molexs.. whoever buys a 6800 ultra is gonna have to drop some stuff... im usin 2 for HDs, 2 for opticals, plus lights and fans... i suppose if i werent so picky about hiding cables i could count how many there are.. its either 5 or 6... im pretty sure that the 550s are the same way
using myself as an example - alot of people are gonna for the ATI on this one cuz of the power requirements. speaking of which, how much power do 2 12inch cold cathodes use? cuz unless i turn them on before booting, my computer restarts, and it kind of sucks.. i know its cuz the balast has to charge, cuz if theve been on and i go off then on its fine. |
That's horrible, mine don't do that...When you getting that card? I'd kill myself if I were still using that MX 420...The 9500 Pro is MUCH better than the 5600, I mean, they don't even compare.
yea, that is a big picture
that is a big picture, that is why i like my computer...
(check attachment) |
hey my speakers!!!!!
very creative idea there! |
bump to the idea of waiting for PCIe. That way you can have gig ethernet not clogging your bus, along with high bandwidth videocards and low latency sound. though with a new mobo, i would also go the 64 bit route, but whatever
does having gigabit ethernet built in really clog up your bus?
i thought intel chipsets avoided that? im not sure but i sure would like to see PCI-E mobos go onto shelves sooner since they are basically all ready |
