Help building a new comp for under $1000usd

I'm wanting to build a new gaming computer for around 1000$. I already have a monitor, speakers, keyboard, and mouse but will need everything else. I'm looking for reccommendations for the best parts and best places to get them. I don't intend to overclock it. Any help is really appreciated.

go to www.newegg.com why not overclock...? I think it's foolish to not consider overclocking.. but i guess if you wanna spend alot more than you have to it's your gig..

fatmcb1 05-23-2004 06:43 PM

my reason for not overclocking is
1) i havent done it and dont know how
2) i would be forever pissed if i screwed up something i paid a lot for
if i knew some1 that would do it for me that was experienced and wouldnt mess it up for sure, then i would

Well i've done alot of overclocking.. if you buy the right parts and have decent cooling and don't do anything too drastic (aka putting the cpu voltage as high as it goes) then nothing should die.. surely someone else here can give you more help.. they'll probably tell you to buy some amd computer.. if I wanted amd and was on a budget i'd get an a7n8x-e mobo, 2500+, 512 or 1 gig pc3200 ram and two 80gig western digital's with 8mb cache and raid 0 them.. then i'd OC the cpu to 3200+ (easily done with an fsb switch of 166 to 200) :/

Yeah, J425 has a good point. Of course, I'd be glad to sell you an Asus board with a AMD XP 3000+ (no cooler, you're on your own there...) for $200. All you'd have to buy then is a video card, ram, case, powersupply and cdrom and you've got yourself an awsome computer.

fatmcb1, I'd go for that.

Id OC my amd 64 but its fast enough and I dont want to spend another 500$ fixing and the such

gnogtr 05-24-2004 04:16 PM

I'm overclocked as far as it will go. The 3000+ will have a Radeon 9800 Pro with it in a few weeks when my Radeon X800 XT comes in. It'll be $400 then.

Jason425 05-24-2004 07:50 PM

newegg 9800 pros are only like 205 or something..

gnogtr 05-24-2004 08:34 PM

None-the-less, I'm practically giving the board and processor away.

Jason425 05-24-2004 08:52 PM

well $100 for the first two.. + used, + overclocked.. whatever...

gnogtr 05-24-2004 09:40 PM

...Not too bad....

Jason425 05-24-2004 09:42 PM

not too good either

gnogtr 05-24-2004 09:46 PM

Well...for that price, it won't hurt anything..all the parts still have the manufactor's warrenty on them.

Jason425 05-24-2004 09:55 PM

yea.. ebay price range there.. oh and you know that overclocking voids all warranty

gnogtr 05-25-2004 06:19 AM

They don't know that (the companies, AMD/Asus).

Dragon 05-25-2004 07:42 AM

i bought my board and 3000+ for a hundred off a freind, so with all the extra features id say 200 is a good deal. haHA! i am also going to buy a new X800XT PE. im waiting for BTX and PCI express though. cuz im gonna upgrde to sata and onboard dolby 5.1 or higher.

who thinks i should go 64 while im at it?

gnogtr 05-25-2004 04:46 PM

You need to, get the 64 3800+. You'll be getting the ATI X880 XT though, not the X800 if you plan on going PCI express.

Jason425 05-25-2004 07:33 PM

BTX = HELLA W00T (and what i'm waiting for)

arstechnica has a semi-annual buying guide for different price range systems. check it out
