Doom 3 Performance boost

Found this on Bittorrent.

-

I dunno if it's just me, but I noticed this trick beefed up my DOOM3 performance by a lot.

Anyhoo:

In your DOOM 3 directory, find "DoomConfig.cfg" (x:\Program Files\Doom 3\base). Open DoomConfig.cfg in Notepad.

Find the line:

seta image_cacheMegs "32"

I changed 32 to 96.

I got a nice boost in performance. I dunno if the tweak worked or not (maybe my machine did something wierd, have no clue), so I'm just seeing if this works for others as well, or if a different setting works better than others.

anyone get this working?

StinkyMojo 08-16-2004 10:36 AM

Ill try it tonight (I only play doom 3 during the night ;))

Jason425 08-16-2004 10:40 AM

looks like that tweak takes more ram.. i'd beware if you only have 512 (stinky)

Jason425 08-17-2004 12:36 AM

bah.. 4x256 = leet...

Napster 08-22-2004 08:06 PM

Hey, i tried that and first of all mine was set at "24" not "32", which may be because of the different performance levels in our cards.. But also, I changed it to 96 and didnt really notice any difference.. but thats just me and my system... I think it depends on the amount of RAM on the mobo and on the VGA card.

Prometheus 08-22-2004 08:08 PM

mine slowed down and got choppy a bit at certain intervals.....

Jason425 08-22-2004 11:03 PM

What are you trying to say? Ohh yea i dont have Powmax I have Powertek.... Its a typo in my signature thing.

Jason425 09-02-2004 03:16 PM

powmax psu's kill people.. (not really, but the people wish they were dead after it kills their comp..) pick your poison? i've never heard of powertek before either.. oh and gg recognizing a typo and then not fixing it.. :P

vee_ess 09-02-2004 11:09 PM

Powmax...Powertek, what's the difference. It's not an Antec and that's all that matters!

Jason425 09-02-2004 11:30 PM

pretty much! *drools @ gauged price neopower*

vee_ess 09-03-2004 01:16 AM

Don't you love your TruPower 430, Jason425? It handles anything I throw at it and never has any fluctuation. :)

StinkyMojo 11-05-2004 11:20 AM

.......obviously no one did if he read the thread

I've read about several boosts. The one your described I did... however got little difference. I usually got 38 FPS on Doom 3 on medium details and 800 by 600 (tested it with fraps) i tested it with the 32 changed to 96. only 40 FPS. I have 1.5 gigs of ram. I changed it to 328 and got a bigger shift it stayed solid 45 fps.. future changes did nothing.

There's another performance boost (don't do with the demo)
Go into the base Folder in Doom3 Copy the pak4 files somewhere so you have them and can revert if needed to join an online game.

Pak000
Pak001
Pak002
Pak003
Pak004

Take each pak file and open them with WinRar
When you open them using winrar, they will appear as folders, not zip files, take each file and left click and drag the folder into the base folder

pak000pk4 has a LOT of files, select all and do the same thing you did with the others, when prompted to overwrite, click yes to all

When you have completed this process you will have a bunch of folders (maps Textures, Sounds, ect) in your base folder.

Delete or move the zipped PK files that you just unrar'ed

When you play now you will see an insane performance boost!

it actually didnt make any difference to my machine

Jason425 11-15-2004 12:35 AM

probably becasue you have so much ram.. that's nuts..

your sig.. I dunno about beware gamers.. i'd say beware the rest of your comp from your power supply.. never heard of powerage before... poof... :/

lilhacker89 01-25-2007 11:02 AM

my game didnt get a big boost, in doom beacuse i have 4 gigs ram and it didnt do too much
