No Windows XP SP2 for AMD64 Users

Guess that means no NX bit support as well as a host of other benefits. Benefits of course depending upon how you look at things. Truely this editor thinks that AMD should team up with unit or linux and dominate, or better yet go for Apple. That would be like Apple64 right? MS has been like Intel for a while and now hasn't been on the ball.

Read about it.

eheehhehehe amd noobs.. 8) yes, go to apple, we won't miss you.. :wavey:

umm, apple already has 64 bit with a fairly promising new architecture

vee_ess 08-27-2004 10:33 PM

Yeah, well it's IBM's creation, not Apple's. Also, the AMD architecture is more potent, and has proven more powerful for current processors (excluding the dual processor systems unless you allow Opterons to compete).

Whatever is on top, though, I think Apple should put in a little R&D and release a version of their OS for AMD64's. It wouldn't be too hard for them to since OS X is based on Unix. Then you'd be able to have an OS as secure and reliable as any, while still easy to use, on the best hardware...

If you read the whole article it states that you'll need to make a modification in the DEP. And that the problem only occurrs when using a handfull of very specialized programs.

Quote:

Microsoft said in its advisory that PCs with 64-bit AMD processors may restart repeatedly after installing Service Pack 2, if those machines are also configured to enforce so-called data execution prevention (DEP) and contain hardware that requires a driver software known as Mpegport.sys.
Note the IF and the AND in the quote.

I see no reason the rethink buying an AMD 64-bit. These circumstances are to vauge (and easy to work around i needed) to casue a problem.

And since this is my first post I think a bit HI! is in order. :)

ok black belt baby.. hi... and dep is one of the main features of the amd 64.. those ms noobs need a patch for you 64-bit babies.. 8)

Ogloka 09-09-2004 02:26 AM

Yeah, but the problem will only occurr if you allso use the Mpegport.sys driver, ofcasue DEP is on of the most important thing in SP2 but I just don't see what the big fuss is all about.

Sure it's bad. But really, how many out there are using the Sigma decoder anyway?
