in y'alls opinion, will using a hdd fan, or a bayfan help increase a hdd's life span? thanks!

Likely a bay fan, but it depends on the airflow surrounding your HDD. If there's too free of flow, then a HDD fan will help more.

I had one of those fans that attach on the HD and all it did was make noise because the bearing broke down fast and attract dust.. unless you have horrible case airflow, no casefans, really hot/fast HD's or a combination of those, you're fine without them.. and with that cheapo thing you bought, it's not worth it.

edit: just like to say, when one has limited funds, one must take what one can get. especially when you want your main machine up and running ASAP.

exactly, and when you have limited funds, you don't really need to worry about HD fans, so that you can save up for a comp that will give you "a better experience"

i've have a 'better experience' at work. but anyway, good point about limited funds and the fan thing. anyway, there is a plan for a new machine in the works. thinking of building a machine with a sempron. saving any xmas money, and putting away about 20 buck a month. we shall see what happens.

edit: in addition, this is a budget machine. it will cost about $150 using parts that i already have. never claimed it to be a performance monster, i have no need for a machine like that right now. any work that i do can actually be done on my current machine without bogging it down one bit, and i dont have time to play games. for my purposes, i dont need an athlon64, so i'm not going to spend the money on performance that i'm not even gonna use. now after i finally finish a degree, and my wife is settled into her business - maybe i'll have time to play with a faster more powerful machine. until then, its budget. so if you have any reason why a sempron, or celeron - BUDGET chips- should not be used in BUDGET machines, let me know.
