Privacy at work?

Does anyone know how to keep an employer from being able to tell what websites you visited and what items were downloaded in the office?  In other words, does anyone know how to enforce workplace security from the employees point of view?  Thanks!!

There is no actual way of knowing if your company is checking on what you are doing. It depends on what software they use on the network and if they even check on it. If you are in Europe then they are supposed to tell you that they can see what you are doing as part of the privacy laws, I'm not sure about the rest of the world.

Even if they do not have any software to check and you connect straight through to the internet it is very easy to see where users have been. Cookies in you your profile get dropped at most web sites. The history in Internet Explorer will show where you have been as well.

Snooping on users is very easy. I would recomend that you only use the company internet connection for professional use. At the least get advise from a manager about what you are allowed to do, send an e-mail so that you get in writing that you can use the internet for personal use.

Take care in what you do.

This day n age, security and snooping is very effective from the employers perspective.

You can go anywhere you want and clear your history removing your tracks from your computer but the trail is left lingering on the firewall and many other places.

Your company should have an acceptable use or some such protocol in place as to what you are allowed to do.

I've worked for companies that if you go where you're not supposed to they print out the page you're on that's in question and bring it by your desk before they escort you to the door.

The best security for you my friend is just say NO don't do it. Save the surfin for home.

Especially with all the layoff these days too. You can be escorted to the door at any time and what ever is on your computer stays there even when you're not. It's thier equipment after all.

Have a good one.
