Corporate migration to Vista
 

I have read a lot recently about corporations making statements that XP is just fine as it is, and that they see no reason to upgrade to another windows version until 2010. So folks, could this be the death of Microsoft as we know it? What if no one bothers to replace XP (after all it seems pretty stable)? I know Microsoft are desperate to get it released so they can weigh down their purse strings again, but do we really need another windows release?

This is actually normal with all the versions of Windows that came along. The "migration" happens when they'll need to buy a new computer as a whole, and they will go "might as well put Vista on it." It's been like that for all of their Windows Version and other known products (such as Visual Studio.)

But Microsoft knows that companies will need to buy new computers within years ;)

Slash is right though... sooner or later MS will start withholding features from xp like they do for 2000 now. That'll be enough to get most to switch.

I don't think corporate America is ready for a non Windows OS anytime soon, maybe in the background where adminstrators use unix machines, but in reality what other OS do you see working for end users in a major way in 5 years? Who knows, maybe google will innovate bringing information (in the form of open source OS's) to the masses, with their vast content management or googlebase jazz.

Death of Microsoft? That would be the day. Even if a new operating system happened to overcome Microsoft's OS's, they have their hand in so many other things now I think it would be nearly impossible that they died.

Plus they obviously have the money and resources available to become the best at whatever market they dare to enter. If they really wanted to make Microsoft toaster ovens they would probably end up coming out with a top seller :rofl: .


As for needing a new operating system, probably not. Like almost everything else in this world it seems it's all about 80% profit, 20% innovation.

Well, as much as the whole Death to Evil Microsoft goes, I understand that some people would wish for a non-Windows OS to be the prime OS everyone uses...but that requires one thing: convincing everyone.

I mean sure I like the fact that other alternatives OS exist....but then I want to ocde using something as efficient as Visual Studio...and then I want to play some new games that are coming out. All of these require Windows, and unless they all start being compatible for MAC OS or any other OS, people will not migrate for the simple fun of migrating.

This brings up a potentially interesting question:
What's more damaging (needs to be changed from first), fossil fuels or Microsoft?

I vote fossil fuels... MS can't actually destroy the world.
