#1 - Does being portable matter ? If yes, then a desktop is not an option
#2- do you do heavy gaming , graphic's intencive programs? If yes then a desktop will out preform the best laptop if the right parts are bought

I myself prefer desktops/ Towers. My main reason is that repairing them is quite a bit cheaper than repairing a laptop. I know this because I have a pc repair business

Desktop motherboard $50 to $100 ** unless your buying cutting edge chipsets then it goes up **
Laptop Motherboard $120 to $250+ depending on model

Desktops can be upgraded very easily, where as most laptops cant be upgraded at all, other than ram, hard drives, and DVD/CD Rom drives

Laptos are very portable , making it convient and great for working somewhere other than the office or home.

so after all the rambleing on, it boils down to what will suite your needs best.

The main points behind a laptop are portability.

You have to remember one thing, if you want to upgrade in the future it will be a lot more difficult with a laptop, especially for graphics.

If your going laptop and don't have a lot of money, say $1000, check out HP, they have a lot of goods ones with the less expensive AMD processors.

I would say go for a PC with a decent configuration if you don't need the portability. Also, devices can be upgraded/changed more easily in case of PCs & are much less expensive than their notebook counterparts.

Only get a laptop if you are going to move it out of the house often. With a laptop you will pay 3 times as much for half the horsepower and they are a lot harder to upgrade.

So if you are going to move it out of the house a lot or if you're really rich get a laptop.

It all depends on your situation, like everyone else seems to have pointed out.

With my desktop, I'm constantly making small investments here and there to keep it relatively current with changing technology.

With my laptop, I can't upgrade, but would hate to be without its portability.

All comes down to what you need most.

If you decide to go the laptop route. Look into the Vostro line from Dell. I bought a Vostro 1400 which is a 14" laptop and absolutely love it! It has enough power to easily play a lot of games - 8400GS, Core2Duo, 2gb ram, etc. It was only $700 for a mostly loaded portable, very good price.

On the other hand if you go with the desktop, you should look into building your own or finding someone you know to help you do it. You can build a fairly powerful machine for not too much money. I just built my grandfather an Athlon X2 4000+, 2gb DDR2, and some other tid-bits for less than $500. If you added a decent discrete graphics card to the fray, then you could have a semi-decent gaming machine.

Good luck!

You've read the pros and cons...now the most important factor...

What do you WANT? Needs must be covered, but when making these purchase decisions, you should give substantial consideration to what you want. It's painful to make a pricey purchase and then regret it because it wasn't what you really wanted.
