Which linux flavor is the best for beginners?
I know basic linux commands but i want to learn more about the entire operating system. Which flavor of linux would be the best for a beginner? I want to play with apache, qmail, and mySQL.

Re: Which linux flavor is the best for beginners?
Me personally, I use FreeBSD, but there is Red Hat, Mandrake etc etc out there.
It's kinda like the PC vs. MAC thing, depends on the one you start with that you end up hanging on to I think. Not much help there, but from my experience I have had no probs what so ever running FreeBSD and I use Apache, PHP, MySQL, Postfix and some others. |
Re: Which linux flavor is the best for beginners?
Ive used afew different flavours and when I was learning I found Redhat and Mandrake the best for newbies.
Hope that helps Simo |
Re: Which linux flavor is the best for beginners?
I'm going to throw my vote in for RedHat. It's pretty straight forward, and has pretty good documentation and support. And after you get familliar with that junk, you can always switch over to another flavor and have a new chance to mess that one up all over again :D! (Unless you're actually already a 1337 linux h4x0r, and you're trying to put on a clever rouse of being a linux newbie, which I'm sure is the case :P.)

Re: Which linux flavor is the best for beginners?
if you actually want to learn about the OS use slack. Redhat and Mandrake will teach as much about linux as windows xp will.

Re: Which linux flavor is the best for beginners?
i disagree with above...
MDK yea can be used as a plain alternative to Doze if u let it, you can still use CLI and learn about linux while also having a nice gui to go back to every once in a while if you really cockup and need some help off the net im a linux n00b myself but so far everyone has recommended mdk first, then tryout slackware |

What software do you need to run windows rograms in linux
|
Running Windoze in Linux
I don't know why you would ever want to stain you soul with running windoze, but if you have to do it use VMWare.

theres Lindows and WINE for windows emulation
WINE is currently the best in my opinion |
