XP syping
I just set-up ZoneAlarm firewall on my new dell Laptop out of habit. Sure XP Pro has a firewall but I allways do things my way. As soon as I rebooted ZoneAlarm caught 5 :o diffrent processes trying to go to the internet. I thought about going back to 98 but I can't get drivers for my 8100 inspiron off of dell and we all know that laptop drivers are specialised. ::) So now I need some information on making XP do only what I want it to when I want is and how I want is to. Any pointers guys?

Re: XP syping
yeah, even though XP has a firewall, it sux and you should use zonalarm anyway, cuz it is inbound only. i would start by preventing anything i dont want to start at startup to no start at startup like MSN messenger. you can do that in the registry. if you want further details tell me. also, more of the processes are seperated to make it more stable, making more stuff that wants to go to the internet.

Re: XP spying
Of course XP is spying (if that's what you mean), but boy MS knows better ways ;)
The applications attempting to connect to Internet are networking services (just like in W2K I assume, since built on NT kernel ), like DNS, RRA, WINS that are trying to establish connection with the rest of the network, considering Web a part of LAN ... If you'll check the log you'll see what is trying to access, so sort of false alarm here. In other hand, IE has all the tools for sending your registry info far far away ;) Cheerio Chef |
