Restoring the registry from DOS??
Recently I tried boosting my cable/dsl performance with registry entries from speedguide.net. Before I did this however I exported my registry to a file on my desktop in Windows 2K.
Luck will have it that the registry entries corrupted my system giving me ntoskrnl.exe errors and stop errors. I have tried to boot to dos to run scanreg /restore but it says that it does not recognize the command. I have also tried F8 for last known configuration and that is corrupt also. I tried using the win 2k cd and do a repair but it will not let me login into my documents and settings folder without a password that is different than the administrator password. I know that a good export of my registry exists on my desktop. The only question is how do I get to it to recover my registry and once I get to it what do i use. Like a fool I never made an ERD or a good backup so any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you JJ |

Re: Restoring the registry from DOS??
JJ,
Not sure I completely understand the problem, but can you get to the 'run command' ( start/run ) then type in : scanregw /fix If not and you can get a DOS C prompt, type in: scanreg /restore and see if you are presented with RBcab000 ( XXX ) with dates, the highest number cab will be the last one. Or maybe you can do a search/find for : rb000.cab. They will be found in directory c:\windows\sysbckup. browse to that directory. See how many total copies of rb00*.cab files there are. The RB is registry backup and should contain 4-5 backups with dates, if not the highest number is the latest. From there you should be able to restore it. |
Re: Restoring the registry from DOS??
I'm not sure if the w2k regedit works console in the same way as the 98 regedit in the dos...but...
Code:
Imports and exports registry files to and from the registry. |
Re: Restoring the registry from DOS??
???
It seems scanreg does not come with Win2k only 98 and ME. However, I am able to boot into safe mode which allows me to see the exported registry file I created before this problem. I just cannot re-import the file while in win2k because it says some of the keys are in use. (even in safe mode) That's why I was hoping for a dos alternative. I have also done a search for the user and sytem.dat files but I am still new to Win2k and seems that they don't exist. Only files like NTuser.dat and System with no extension. I thought that maybe if I could rename those and recover the backups I might have a chance. |
Re: Restoring the registry from DOS??
JJ,
You are 100 percent correct, win 2k is nothing like the other ver's on restoring the registry, I don't have win 2k, maybe someone with that experience will post some help, meanwhile , if you haven't already read this, it may help some: ------- Backing Up and Securing the Registry ------- Mastering the Recovery Console ------- edit, and restore the registry in Windows 2000? ------- |
